Give it a few years and your be able to get them at a respectable price.
There are a few other technologies that have the ability to theoretcally store terrabytes of data on one disc.

scroll down to Next Generation Optical Discs

If any of these come out with the next 5 years, blue-ray/hd-vd could be a complete failure and hardware vendors may shift over to making those next generation optical discs players.

In a nutshell, i would wait and see how the technology pans out.

Totally agree. This is true of the standalone HD players as well. HDCP and all!
The blue ray DVD players are selling for $799. Supposedly they run an embedded version of Linux.

leo mentioned on the latest foss bi-monthly that his new hdtv runs linux too.
