Pat and Link were talking on last nights show (#189) that they typically install Ubuntu and then, using apt-get, install KDE. I usually download and install Kubuntu and if I want to put Gnome on (which I really don't use much) I do it via apt-get.
I was wondering is there some advantage in installing Ubuntu first as opposed to Kubuntu? Or is it just habit. They mentioned some weird stuff with KDE after installing in this matter. On one of my machines I have had some weird stuff happen with Gnome after having installed it from Kubuntu.
I was just curious about other folks thoughts on this and their experience.

Ubuntu or Kubuntu first?

I know that when I run KDE apps on Ubuntu, I often times get error messages and have issues that I never had when I used gentoo and ran KDE. K3B, Filelight, and a few others KDE apps sometimes crash, even, and I never had that happen on gentoo (expect with Kmail when I used a testing keyword, but I chose the instability there). This is starting to make me think that if you want something major—like a desktop environment—that isn't in the forcus of the distro, then it's probably worth considering the use of another.
SimplyMepis is now based on Ubuntu, and is supposed to give you a decent KDE. There are a ton of Ubuntu based distros that will probably just increase:

You know, for me it's mostly habit. Way back when, I started using Ubuntu where the KDE stuff was just a meta package - there was no Kubuntu at the time. I was pretty satisfied with Gnome but wanted to give KDE a shot, so I installed it through the meta package. Now in the next release when Kubuntu was actually available on it's own, there were wild rumors that things were not right and missing from Kubuntu, and people should just install the meta package over Ubuntu and go that way to avoid problems, so that's what I did. Ever since then I have just followed those procedures by default even though I hear that Kubuntu proper is absolutely fine now in its own right.Scott wrote:Pat and Link were talking on last nights show (#189) that they typically install Ubuntu and then, using apt-get, install KDE.
