Yep, another firm submits to not wanting any code that will be under GPLv3!Patrick wrote:This time it's Linspire:

No wonder Kevin Carmony was so negative about GPLv3 just a few days ago, he didn't want it to kill his business since he was gonna shwo great disrespect to the FOSS community.
One can only hope that KDE (Which Linspire depends on) can move to GPLv3 ASAP, GNOME will be autoupgraded and in addition to that, they'll probably receive some, I don't know if "pressure" is the right word, but anyway, from the rest of the GNU project.

In theory that is a possibility. But in any case they can't avoid the GPL. Because even on BSD, KDE is under the GPL. Unless they want to write their own desktop environment, going to BSD won't help at all.Patrick wrote:Maybe Linspire will migrate to a BSD based system now?
And also, Linux is not written to work with any of the BSD's libc, so you basically have to test every single bit of the system, yes, even ls! For bugs. I seriously doubt Linspire is capable of this. As I said on the show, even Novell shits their pants over the thought of maintaining everything themselves.
Well, TiVo can just stick with what they got, because GPLv3 isn't retroactive, it inherently can't be. But in 5 years, do you want to use a 5 year old version of the entire GNU system? I don't think so because you can be damn sure that everything that comes out of the GNU project will use GPLv3 in a very short time. The FSF owns all the copyrights for that stuff, so from day one of GPLv3, they can put the hammer down.Patrick wrote:There have been grumblings that Tivo will do so to avoid the GPLv3.

Holy cow. This keeps getting worse. These deals are really, really bad from a FUD perspective. Whether there really is any infringement has become almost irrelevant, which is what Microsoft wanted all along. The _fear_ of a patent lawsuit is much worse than actually being sued, because then the patents in question will be out in the open and probably easily attacked.
These deals are not good for Linux at all.

It isn't the deals per se that make it not good for Linux, it's the "ballmer-whipped" surrender monkey attitude displayed by people like Carmony that make deals like these (for lack of a better term) possible. The Linux community needs a few steadfast "parents" who will stand up to the bullies in Redmond and just tell them no.Chess wrote:Holy cow. This keeps getting worse. I agree, so far I'd say Red Hat is doing a pretty good job.KStorm wrote:It isn't the deals per se that make it not good for Linux, it's the "ballmer-whipped" surrender monkey attitude displayed by people like Carmony that make deals like these (for lack of a better term) possible. And now it's all in the toilet man!Vogateer wrote:That's a shame, I was starting to warm up to Linspire a little bit, too.

Yeah, plus they abide by the GPL, that's always a good thing I think. Plus Fedora just keeps on getting better and better, this whole Revisor thing that allows you to spin your own Fedora is just so cool.Vogateer wrote:Yeah, I forgot to mention that my respect for Red Hat continues to grow. They've been pretty good as an open source company, and have shown a far better understanding of the open source community compared to the rest of the distros mentioned in this thread.

Our monthly LUG meeting is tonight at the Red Hat offices and we're going to have a Faculty Fellow from the Duke Law School who is going to talk about the GPLv3. Should be a good meeting.
Someone has been putting up recordings of some of our past meetings so hopefully they'll do the same with this one in case anyone wants to download and listen.

Chess, if you're going to that LUG meeting, please give the Red Hat guys (Yeah, the CEO too!) a big pad on the back from me for, as Pat said, sticking to their guns, and being a good citizen in the world of free software.Chess wrote:Our monthly LUG meeting is tonight at the Red Hat offices and we're going to have a Faculty Fellow from the Duke Law School is going to talk about the GPLv3. I know what you mean! A couple of weeks back when I was down at our local pizza place, I placed the order and went over to a supermarket to buy some cheap Cola. When I came back to pickup the pizzas, the guy just handed them to me, he apparently assumed that I had already paid for them as I came back for them. I stood there for about 1 short second and thought about the situation, because I thought it was weird. But then I thought "I'm a poor student, free pizza is great!" and then I went on home with two free pizzas, how could you turn down that offer.Chess wrote:Yes, I'm going tonight -- the free pizza is hard to turn down.
