Post by Tsuroerusu » Thu Jun 28, 2007 8:02 am

For the last three Wednesdays, Jza and I have done TLLTS, and riddlebox chimed in last week, sadly he wasn't available this week.
If you've listened to the episodes (196, 197 and 198), I hope you enjoyed it. I eat my own dog food so I listen to it myself, and I think that my voices sounds quite dull for talkradio, guess that's not quite my area of karma

Anyway, I'd like some feedback on these three episodes, what was good? What could have been done better?

Next week there won't be a live show, instead a "Best Of TLLTS" courtesy of Wally Balljacker (Ben), will be posted as episode 199. And the week after that, the guys should finally be back! Which I'm sure those people of you who's been like "Get that crazy Dane off the show!", will appreciate,

I was a little disappointed that I didn't have more time to discuss the FreeBSD jail stuff, but I guess mentioning commands on the show is really something that makes you go zZzzzzZZZzzzZzzzzZzzzzZZzz anyway. I'm still working on an article that explains how to set up a FreeBSD jail, which will be available on website at troelsjust.dk, I hope it'll be useful.

Overall it was a good effort. I'm waiting to get hate mail for Troels calling the Linux Action Show guys "Assholes for not reading the GPLv3 drafts!"

I'll be sure to forward your email address to them ;)

Thanks. Yeah I don't have as much experience as you guys, which probably explains all the "uhmmm", "yeahs", "uhs" that you hear from me during the shows. Very unprofessional, I know!

Yeah that probably was going a little too far, I apologize for that, but when you're upset you may not realize what you say to somebody else.

Anyway, the Linux Action Show guys really frustrate me at times, because they seem so ignorant about GPLv3, and they havn't even read the damn drafts, or done a little research into the subject, and then they starting lambasting the FSF. That just pisses me off. People are free to criticize the FSF, and I'm some people do valid criticism, however the ones that just flat out refuse to read a little into what the FSF is actually saying I don't care for.
I've noted Bryan saying that the GPL restricting how software patents can be used to sue users of free software is "restricting freedom". HOW FREAKING CLUELESS CAN YOU GET! The FSF defines their view of freedom in the preamble of the GPL, and it's stated clearly on gnu.org!!!
You know I better stop, and take a coke, before I go calling people names again!

Oh geez. Think of the hate mail they are going to get. Every gut-wrenching sh!t story ever told rolled into 70 minutes. Poor Dann.

Anyone interested in doing another compilation to fill the rest of the show?

Well, I am not the one putting it out, but I think it's good enough as it is!

Maybe I have to go back and listen again, but I thought you prefaced the whole discussion by telling jza that you hadn't read the actual drafts but were waiting for the final version to come out. I could be wrong - I'm not in the car so I can't rewind and listen to it again to check.

I'm no expert on the GPL and don't claim to be. And I have no doubt that sitting there talking for 2 hours while trying to remain interesting is a very tough thing. But assholes? Really? You don't even know them - and neither do I. But all in all, I think they do a pretty good job over there. Besides, if someone aggravates me, I just stop listening.

All that said, I saw your apology that Pat posted over on their forums and I do commend you on that.

I did say that, however, that is not quite true, I have read large chunks of the various drafts. I have read the entire patent part of the last two drafts, and other various things like that.

It's not that bad really, especially when you have Jza around! This guy has to have a super brain or something, so much information!

I agree. Which is why I asked Pat to post that apology, and I have also emailed both Chris and Bryan personally with a similar note, to make sure they got it. And it's also on my blog.
Like I said in the message, I realize this was a stupid thing for me to say, and I take it back, and will see to that it doesn't happen again.
Also, now that I think about it, Steve Ballmer and Steve Jobs already holds a shared patent on the word "asshole"! So it's not fit for Chris and Bryan anyway even if I were to call them names (Which I am not). ;)

And yes, I agree, they do do a pretty good job, I would just like them to read just a few lines of the FSF's rationale for the changes in GPLv3 or the license drafts themselves, before they go and criticize the FSF or GPLv3. On several occasions I have noted them criticizing something that they had either misunderstood, wasn't true at all, or was just some rumor spurred by the FUD cloud that Linus Torvalds is partly responsible for creating.

Back to the question on feedback in general, I would like to say that I think overall Troels and Alexandro did a very good job. I think it would be hard to fill up a 2+ hour live show, but I listened to all three episodes and enjoyed them all. There were some good topics and I learned a few things that I had not known before. Alexandro, I liked your Python stuff quite a lot and Troels, I look forward to your FreeBSD jails article on your website. FreeBSD is something I have been spending a lot of time with over the last six months and this is one area I have not yet explored.

        Anyway, great job, guys.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, because I enjoyed doing it. I hope I can do it again sometime, I mean if staying up to like 5 AM in the morning doesn't show dedication, I don't know what does! ;)

I actually feel it was quite easy, but that's probably because I actually did some preparing before the actual show started.
I made sure to read every news article I were to bring up, and so forth.

Yeah, I know it seemed a little weird to talk about FreeBSD on a show primarily about GNU/Linux, however I wanted to talk about some sort of virtualization system, that was both easy to use, accessible in the sense that it didn't require a special CPU or a lot of beefy hardware and didn't require you to maintain a custom kernel. The only thing that really fit the bill was FreeBSD jail, plus that was also the one I have had the most experience with.

I also think you guys did a good job. So well in fact maybe you two could fill in on a scheduled basis so the normal crew doesn't get burned out. Pat could even line up a guest, you would have to be nice though  (sorry I could help myself).

I appreciate Troels and Jza filling in during the break, but the Tech Show isn't the Tech Show without Dann, Pat, Allan, and Linc. IMO, If they don't want to do the show anymore, they should hang it up and put it to rest.
