ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – In response to an article published by The New Republic, Ron Paul issued the following statement:

“The quotations in The New Republic article are not mine and do not represent what I believe or have ever believed. I have never uttered such words and denounce such small-minded thoughts.

“In fact, I have always agreed with Martin Luther King, Jr. that we should only be concerned with the content of a person's character, not the color of their skin. As I stated on the floor of the U.S. House on April 20, 1999: ‘I rise in great respect for the courage and high ideals of Rosa Parks who stood steadfastly for the rights of individuals against unjust laws and oppressive governmental policies.’

“This story is old news and has been rehashed for over a decade. It's once again being resurrected for obvious political reasons on the day of the New Hampshire primary.

“When I was out of Congress and practicing medicine full-time, a newsletter was published under my name that I did not edit. Several writers contributed to the product. For over a decade, I have publically taken moral responsibility for not paying closer attention to what went out under my name.”

When there are 20+ years worth of newsletter published in your name, if you really don't agree with and find such writings truly despicable then you get your name off the newsletters. If I had newsletters published under my name for 20 years I would damn well pay closer attention and read what is written in them. He says he takes moral responsibilty for what went out under his name. If even that was true he would have dropped out of the Presidential race by now and resign from Congress.

I don't know about whether there is 20+ years worth of bad articles, but from the articles I've read, this is probably the first thing that we can agree on. If you put your name on a Newsletter, you should be paying attention to what goes in it. Now, I don't agree with you that it's his "moral" responsibility to see what was written, but his name was on the newsletter, so at the very least there's some seriously bad decision making going on. After all, the things are surfacing today, and seriously hurting his reputation.

Of course he has always stated that a certain Jewish economist is his hero, so some of the accusations of racism being his person belief should be treated with some skepticism.

The main idea I'm concerned about is not blindly accepting any mud-slinging article you come across. You can find several articles on just about every candidate that paint them as demonic. I put a lot of effort into checking the facts people quote, and try to be cautious before passing judgement. I believe this applies to just about every piece of journalism you come across. I think we've all read very poorly researched tech articles with regards to linux, and you get the same quality of journalism in politics.
