Show 99, Gas Prices, American attitude on cars

Hey,
I've not been listening to The Linux Link Tech Show for too long but the banter about Gas prices made me laugh.

I am from the UK and petrol prices now are £0.90 a litre, yes a litre not a gallon. If my calculations are right thats $1.53 a litre or $5.38 for a gallon of gasoline.

Perhaps if Americans drove more efficient cars not Huge gas guzzling monster trucks with 3 litre engines as standard that do 6 miles to the gallon, it might encourage less wastage and impact the environment slightly less.

Just a thought.

How about reduce driving all together?

For the past year, my wife and I made a decision to only use the car one day a week, in order to do our major errands (grocery shopping, for example).

The rest of the time, we bike or walk (daily errands, getting to work, etc.).

Even during the winter (except for those days that got bitterly cold) I biked into the office as much as possible.

Although using a more efficient, more compact vehicle helps, it still doesn't help with the noise and congestion and other hazards that heavy traffic brings with it.

If you have too far to walk or bike, consider car-pooling with two or three other people. That's two less vehicles clogging up the streets.

Those are my thoughts on the matter.

Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased; thus do we refute entropy.

Bike riding sounds great but unfortunately I work 58 miles away. So unless I'm Lance Armstrong that's out of the question. I'm one of the guilty gas guzzlers with a Chevy pickup truck. This is my first big vehicle. I used to only own small sporty cars with pretty good gas mileage. My wife at least drives a Subaru. I have 2 years left on my payments but I might be forced to get something a little more fuel efficient. Probably a smaller sedan. Those hybrids are definitely overly hyped up. They don't get as good mileage as they advertise. Hopefully that improves in the future.

We've been discussing this a bit on the LUGRadio forums as well. One important fact that's been missed is US gallons and UK gallons are not the same. UK gallons are 160 ounces, where US gallons are 128 ounces. So your gas price is actually more like $5.79 a gallon.

This also distorts MPG figures as US cars get lower figures since the "G" is smaller.

That being said, I agree that Americans don't all need trucks that get 10 mpg, which never carry more than 1 person at a time. I can actually walk to work now (1.5 miles), and will probably start soon.
