I usually try to keep things non personal but I couldn't help it when I read this article.

Is this guy an actual IT journalists? Cause if he is he needs training.
For the first time somebody is doing something about an actual document standard and to ensure you can read anything no matter what product you buy or don't buy and he calls it close minded. What an arse and a moron.

I have said enough - I think I am start to going to write articles and start flinging shit about microsoft and closed standards and see what sticks.

Sorry for the rudeness but this is a pet peeve I have - along with non-standard websites - how stupid can people be.

I emailed him a letter. Thought he should know he's dreaming if he thinks Microsoft would open up any of their product to the community without any strings attached.

I think that he does make a valid point in that, currently, "Open" document formats are, as far as the end user is concerned, completely useless because they are not ubiquitous. Your average end user is far more concerned with ubiquity than with openness.

But I agree - MS won't open up their standard properly any time soon. Neither are they likely to use the OpenDocument format while they are still in a dominant/monopoly position in the market, as it will not help their sales.

I do think, however, that he makes a couple of valid points that we need to take into consideration in our Open world.
