Audio Editors for Linux Feature Question

Post by mowestusa » Tue Sep 13, 2005 7:40 am

I would love to go open source and Linux for all my work, but I'm just wondering if Linux Editors have this one feature.

I record and edit a weekly radio program that is produced in our homebrew studio, and then played by a local radio station each week. I'm using an old version of Cool Edit for Windows. I don't run the recording through lots of filters after the recording, because we have a mixer with EQ and a Compressor that does the job well as we record the program, so I don't need all the complex features offered by Cool Edit.

However, I don't think I can live without the "Cue Marks". While recording the hosts of the program we continue without ever stoping. If they misspeak or just murder a phrase or sentance they want to say, they simply say "stop", and wait a few seconds, then say "begin". I have the "Cue Mark" tied to the "Q" key on the keyboard, so it is really easy to add those marks. Then it makes the post edit super easy and quick.

Does Audacity have such a feature, because I haven't been able to find it? Also are there other audio editors that I might consider that do have that time saving feature?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Im not quiet sure what your asking...Im not very knowledgable able audio (although I would like to learn). Are you saying you need a program that will censor live radiostreams? Is that possible? Do you have some sort of delay or something? Sorry Im not much help

No, my question has nothing to do with recording live audio streams or censoring. "Cue Marks" are handy tools that allow you to put a marker in the audio file that lets you know there is something at that spot that you want to look at again. It can be used for all sorts of audio editing functions like applying a filter from Cue Mark #1 to Cue Mark #4.

I use Cue Marks to mark mistakes that are made by the hosts that I record for the radio program. They might be going along and misspeak or mess up the pronounciation of a word, and want to have that corrected in the final cut. Since we are doing recorded and edited programs instead of a live show there is no reason to have the mistakes in the final program.

I hope that explains, but thanks for taking a stab at answering.

Yes, audacity does indeed have them. Haven't really used them much myself, but they are there to be used..

Thanks Linc,

You put me on the right track. During recording it looks like you need to use CTRL-M, then after the recording is complete you can add labels with CTRL-B. In both cases the marks are added to a "label" track.

Not quit as slick as Cool Edit's method, but it does look like it would provide similar functionality. I often do the recording, and I have another guy who comes in to do the editing most weeks. He just looks for me cue marks and edits away, without having to listen to the whole recording. I'm sure if you saved Audacity "project" it should save that "label" track too, so it should work pretty well.

Thanks again. By the way it is good to see you in the forums. I don't see you jumping in very often. Anyway thanks Linc, you aways give great information.

Poor Allan, the guy buys a Behringer Mixer (same family I use) and the Behringer Composer (same one I use) for the tech show and he still gets abuse for not responding on the forums, or to email, or posting on his blog.

One thing you can't deny, the guy has great taste in professional audio equipment. Allan is also tech savy, but not communication savy. Or perhaps he spends all his spare time tweaking his Slackware and adjusting his audio sound, that he has no time left for communicating with is his faithful listeners.

We love Allan! Unfortunately seeking victims for his dark master takes up a lot of his time! ;)
