alternatives to My Yahoo

Post by steve riley » Tue Feb 05, 2008 11:51 am

If the microsoft purchase of Yahoo goes through, I will want to leave My Yahoo. What are some good alternatives to My Yahoo?

I'm looking for the usual - email, headlines, calendar, simple stock quotes.

I haven't tried Google, but would like to avoid another monopoly. (They probably know enough about me already!)

I've tried myway.com. It's kind of plain but OK.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

You could try Netscape/AOL. I am not sure if you can still get an "@netscape.net" email though. I set mine up 10 years ago and used to use the Netscape calender until AOL suspended the free one for a while but it's back now. I still use netscape.com as my homepage (now it's really http://netscape.aol.com though); it has news headlines and you might be able to customize it some. If you can get over the fact that it's AOL barrier, it might work. I've always preferred Netscape's home page to Yahoo's; except when they tried that Propeller thing.

We are playing with EYEOS. As long as you have a decent web browser and server, you can have a platform agnostic desktop. I can go to the library (anywhere with a web browser) and then go to our web server to log into EYEOS. You immediately have all the basic apps I need. No need to bring the laptop.

That's impressive. But isn't running FF on the NSLU2...well... slug slow?

FF? It is really not bad for eyeos, firefly, email server, and the web accounting program I have on there. There is an upgrade for eyeos, but I have not installed it yet to see if there is any difference. Moodle and Drupal run like a dog but do work. But then this system was not meant for commercial production use. For me to access via vpn is perfect. If I had to do it over, I might use lighttpd (sp?) instead of apache2. I use a trimmed down application web page for the nslu2 though. The nslu2 is mostly a file/backup server in which i use sshfs alot. SSHFS is much faster than samba and it will take longer filenames. Time to get some rest and sleep for a couple days straight.

I would also like an alternative to "My Yahoo" even though they have rejected the MS deal. My main need is to have quick access to my RSS feeds, the TV show schedule is nice too. I use it mainly for the RSS feeds though. I like being able at a glance see the last 5-8 entries on TLLTS Planet, Distrowatch, Lxer, Linux.com, Linux Journal, and then Associated Press and World News Feeds. All the important news in one place.

I want to switch because "My Yahoo" is dog slow ever since they moved me over to the "beta". I can't stand all of the Ajax, it is not worth it when it slows up the loading of the page by that much. Also I have noticed that if I keep "My Yahoo" open in a tab in Firefox it slows down the whole Firefox experience too. Worthless!

I could set up eyeos, and have been considering it, but I don't really need apps, I just need rss feeds.

I've been thinking about simplifying things if I can't find a better "My Yahoo" in the following way. I have a shell account. I could log into there and check all of my RSS feeds from there in snownews. I could also upload a simple html page to my shell account that would have links to my web email accounts, and sites I like to visit. Then I could just set that as my homepage in all of my computers. Then I would have access to my favorites, my rss feeds, wherever I go. The disadvantage would be if I wanted to see the RSS article with the pictures that might be in it, I could on the shell account view the page in elinks, but graphics would not work.

I don't know, I would love more ideas in this thread, because I really think Yahoo has failed with the beta of "My Yahoo".
