Favorite Linux (and non-Linux) magazines?

This was posted on the Gentoo forum, I thought I might post it here.

As for Linux, I routinely buy Linux Journal and Linux User and Developer. I also read 2600, Scientific American, Skeptic, and Wired.

I think even with the internet and modern technology, the printed magazine will still be with us for a long time, just like radio, vinyl, and mainframes. Some things just never go away. And I think there's something to be said about holding a printed magazine and being able to physically flip through the pages.

None. It's been about a year since I let my LJ sub run out, and never found a reason to renew it - I found I just wasn't reading it anymore. I used to wait in anticipation for my Brew! and Zymurgy mags, though - I gave them up about 5 years ago.

It was 2 or 3 years since i last read linux format which came with slackware 10.1.

I pick up now and again new scientist, national geographic , new statement , red pepper , ambit (its a poetry journal).
I do love my books though, there is not yet a decent colour ebook reader that seems comfortable to use.

I will pick up linux format and the like from the local bookstore. I also like to read make once in a while.With so much online, reading magazines has kind of gone away for us. There are a few free culinary arts magazines we subscribe to. If there was not a place to eat on every corner, it might be nice to own a non-franchised homestyle fast food cafe.

I'm not that big into reading (darn). I seriously try to make a change about that. I used to read Web Developer, before they changed it. I still get subscriptions to eWeek, but since I got into podcasts - my commute to work (public transit) is filled with back-to-back podcasts. I used to get Game Developer, but no luck there either. I have Google Reader and I try to read posts from there, it's kind of working out, but I'm still using it for podcasts too.

I had subscribed to Linux Magazine and then over the summer, I suddenly got a copy of Linux Pro Magazine with a note that my remaining subscription of Linux Mag will be fulfilled with Linux Pro because Linux Magazine ceased printing. Ok, fine, and I like Linux Pro but this week I got the renewal notice - $84. No way! So I see that Linux Journal, which I used to subscribe to, is still under $30 so it looks like I'm going that route.

Non Linux magazines? QST and PCMagazine

A good magazine whilst sitting on the throne is a must. I also like doing the daily cryptoquote from the paper in the can too.

I don't really check out magazines much anymore because I find them to be outdated compared to the information I find online. Still, here are the ones I like to check out.

Magazines are still great on the throne, but I think the portable computer has taken up that spot (at least for me).

QST and Telephony magazines. QST is the publication from the ARRL for amateur radio members, and Telephony is a free magazine on the telecom industry I get because I work for a major telecom. I actually do a lot of reading online these days because so much news and information is easily available with Akregator and all the different news and web services. There is still no substitute for books though, of which I have several translations of the Bible I read daily, non-fiction books, and now thanks to Dann and Bryan comics for my taste of fiction, .

I used to pick up Linux Format the odd time from Chapters (Canadian big box book store) but at around $20 an issue it got to be rather expensive. Linux journal is a lot cheaper and has some decent articles in it.

For other topics, I read The Hockey News, The Economist and PC Gamer.

None anymore, I used to buy Linux Format religiously but as I started listening to some of the great podcasts ( sorry but over here in the UK due to the time difference TLLTS is a podcast ). I was reading the magazine and the news was just old. I will buy it now and then but only if the cover disk is something I want, to save on my bandwidth.
