"This afternoon, Microsoft officially announced that Windows XP Home would be available for ultra low-cost PCs until 2010. The end date, tentatively June 30 of that year, somewhat depends on when Microsoft ships Vista successor Windows 7. I see the choice of XP Home as reactionary—to Linux prospects on these devices and to Vista's greater hardware demands. The licensing extension also means that ultra low-cost PCs running Vista Home won't be enterprise ready."

As users become more tech saavy, i think that will come back to byte ms in the posterior. The more it gets out that the home version is a pos, who will care about or want it. Microsoft and Apple survive on user ignorance. I bet that there will be enough negative feedback that pro will be extended also. Winflv (I think that was it's name?) was supposed to be the low end xp like os and it went over like a lead balloon after the word got out what a pos it was. If hardy heron and the like get a bit more polish and barring a miracle improvement is Vista then I suspect MS is pretty much dead in the desktop market. Maybe that is why ms cajoled Novell. they already see the writing on the wall. There was also a rumor that vista was intentionally made problematic to boost the use of suse linux. If you read some of the reports from microsoft to the sec (securities and exchange commission) it is better than reading the funny papers. Microsoft knows they are in deep fecal mater if you read between the lines.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I really don't think so. We're only talking about two years, so I'd say it's simply because many people hate Windows Vista, so they still want to stick with Windows XP. So after those two years, I think Microsoft is assuming "We'll have a better OS out by then" or something like that. I don't see how this would ever be because of pressure from GNU/Linux, especially because the area where the biggest opportunity for inroads lies, is in the business market, and Microsoft is not extending the life of XP Home, not XP Pro which is what businesses use.

Microsoft just reported that they plan to get windows 7 out next year instead of two years later. I wonder if they listen to this podcast.
