Apple User Tries Ubuntu and likes it - sort of

My test laptop was using the GNOME desktop interface. On start up, it offered me a choice of interfaces (KDE, GNOME, etc.) The oddness of this struck me: isn’t Ubuntu enough? It appears I still needed to select a separate desktop interface.

I imagined the average non-technical user being confused by this. ”I’m using Ubuntu, but I have to choose a ‘desktop interface’? Why isn’t it built in, like it is with Window and Mac? And what the heck is ‘KDE’?” The Linux desktop needs to eliminate that extra choice if it wants to reach a mass audience.
I can't help but find it funny to keep coming across the mindset in some folks that having a choice is a bad thing.

I'm willing to bet that if Apple offered a choice of Aqua and Aqua2, no Apple user in the freaking world would complain.

Some people NEED to be told what to do.

Maybe I'm tripping, but I don't recall ever being offered a desktop option by *buntu - ubuntu=gnome, kubuntu=kde, xubuntu=xfce, etc, no?

However, I do agree with their assessment that most people have no idea what to do with choice, especially when it comes to software.

Yeah, since when did Ubuntu start offering a choice between GNOME and KDE during installation? I thought if you wanted something other than GNOME, you needed to install Xubuntu or Kubuntu.

I have not tried it on hardy, but you can easily add kde or xfce after the install is complete.
from the command line: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop and or sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop.
I prefer to go without a desktop using the alternative installer cd, then sudo apt-get install xdm xorg fluxbox.
unless I want to check hardware compatibility, I usually do not use the desktop cd's.

I am aware that you can install any desktop or window manager you want through APT after the installation, but doing a standard Ubuntu install will give you a GNOME desktop without even asking. Ubuntu has always been entirely GNOME-centric, and the end user is never even presented with a choice of environments. Personally, I see this as a good thing considering Ubuntu's target market.
