Web apps

Post by eddie » Thu May 08, 2008 8:52 pm

Dann mentioned about using web apps. We use quite a bit of web apps. (ie. squirrel mail, various cms's such as moodle and crm software packages, weboffice, eyeos, firefly, home grown apps and etc. If for no other reason it saves space on fat clients for both apps and data. We also use quite a bit of thin clients. I like that because also because backup is much easier. We only have to back up data a few machines instead of many. I have an old 400 mhz notebook that I carry with me and get into the system at the office remotely. One advantage of this is no data is on the laptop if it gets stolen. (all caches are cleared after use). One advantage of using eyeos, weboffice , as well as the other apps is that I can do business from any machine on the planet with just a working web browser. Moodle and the like is great for doing remote power point type presentations. We also use freenx and nx a lot for remote local access.

The idea of "an online OS" is just a wet dream of the NSA or something. I think the future will see tighter online integration (Like sharing your listening statistics in Amarok with like last.fm in deeper ways) with desktop apps. I just don't think the whole "online desktop" will ever happen.

Why would it be a wet dream of NSA ? i think its a great way to make thin clients with different interfaces rapidly. Instead of hacking on kde or gnome or something else to make it how you like in C/C++ code it can be done so much quicker in web languages and the results can be viewed with the press of a refresh button in a web browser, no need for compiling.

For all the on-line game playing, what is the difference between that and using web based apps? I just listened to a podcast of "Open Voices" where an oracle employee (I forget his name) was talking about the future of computing. Industry is already gearing up for a web based environment or something like it. As one example, the universities at least here in Texas use just one generic website to take applications for all students entering college no matter where they plan to attend. Quite a few people now do their taxes on-line now. When I dad was in college, he would have never thought the typewriter would have come obsolete. Do not get me wrong, I will never give up the freedom and power of a standalone machine, but you have to be practical sometimes.
