I think the latest stat I read had Desktop Linux at 2%. I think we will see 5% by 2010, and then 10% by 2012 or 2013. We are nearing the tipping point IMHO.

Linux desktop share is certainly evolving, to predict by 2050 that at least 40 % of desktops will be using linux, I don't think is unreasonable. My crystal ball is full of dirt and gunk to be certain that it will happen but its a nice prediction

I think with the positive side effects such as the embedded market, now the phone market with the Verizon and the Nokia deal and now the car maker deals and of course with the server market with the New York Stock Exchange leading the way in recognition. Linux will get that added boost in popularity. I could see people saying "hey I like how my phone works..this Linux stuff is pretty cool" ..kinda thing. I think Wubi is a much needed boost for Linux, now formerly reluctant Window users can install and try out Linux with Wubi without messing with their Windows installation.

I would agree with your comments about Linux really seeing some uptake in the embedded markets. I also agree that Wubi is a great tool to encourage more Linux adoption. I wonder however, how many people even realize that they are running Linux on their phone to have that "Ah Ha" moment. Even the Walmart PC's did not say they had Linux installed, but that they had gOS installed. I have heard professional tech industry people even speak of Ubuntu as an alternative OS without making a solid connection to the fact that it is Linux. Thousands of people have TiVo's, but have they been sitting in their living rooms saying, "Wow this Linux thing is so cool, I really want this on my computer too." Or do they say if they even know that Linux is running on their TiVo's, "Wow, this Linux thing sure works great for recording my videos and watching TV, I think I'll go check my email with MS Outlook now." For those of us who are in the Linux world, and read Linuxdevices.com we know about the cool devices that have Linux on them. However, when I see the marketing ads with those devices, I haven't seen Nokia adds talking about Linux on their phones and 800 series. I haven't seen cell phone ads point to Linux as why their phone is superior. When we start seeing more ads targeted at the common user or consumer that focus on Linux as one of the reason why it is a great product instead of simply saying "Nice User Interface" or "Easy to use OS" or "Powerful Applications to keep you connected", then we might have more "Ah Ha" moments. This is probably something that will happen eventually, just like you have computers now that try to sell themselves by putting the "Vista Inside" sticker on the box and on the computer itself.
