Ubuntu Netbook version not available for free download?

Post by Vogateer » Thu Jun 05, 2008 7:08 am

Edit
I believe this post from Mark Shuttleworth explains the situation better:

The deal they make with OEMs means they can't distribute images, but the software that runs on the laptop is free and freely available. At least that's my understanding, and I feel better reading that.

From http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.p ... pid;1;pf;1:
Unlike its other consumer desktop and enterprise Linux versions, Ubuntu will not offer free downloads of the Remix version and will only offer it to prospective netbook vendors for their use, Carr said.
That seems to go against the Ubuntu credo, doesn't it?

I read that too, so I guess someone will get a copy of it and post it on bit torrent ' probably be more popular than the "Vista Ultimate Lite Plus for 256 MB Ram computers" and The "Last to final Corporate Edition of XP SP3 Lite Express Essentials" .
Linux Mint 9 Gnome, Ubuntu 8.10 Easy Peasy , Open Suse, Windows XP PRO and others.

Maybe they'll have to change:
Ubuntu will always be free to download, free to use and free to distribute to others.
to
Ubuntu will always be free, you'll just have to pay someone else for it... and since we're only putting this on one computer, you'll not be able to distribute it.
I'm glad I got of the ubuntu wagon when I did... It's a nice OS, but they make me nervous... :|

Your TV might soon be obsolete.

Not really. A video card with s-video or composite out work great with analog televisors. Especially good for text based servers.

It's a strange quote that I found, then. If all the software for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix is free—as in freedom—then I'll be awaiting the first subnotebooks that use it (Dell, perhaps?) with anticipation. Otherwise I'll want no part of it.
