aRts, TV out, multimedia woes

aRts, TV out, multimedia woes

I've been using Linux for about a year now. It's beautiful for the most part and a programmer's dream. However, I notice that it's seriously lacking in the multimedia department. XMMS and Mplayer, the most popular(!) options for multimedia audio and video, have too many quirks. ATI almost goes out of their way to NOT support Linux. Outruling Cedega, there's almost no way to play new games.

I have two questions for you educated gentlemen:

Why is aRts so confounded? Sometimes my mic works, sometimes it doesn't, for no apparent reason. And no, it's not a volume issue. :)

Second, are there any options for TV output with ATI AIW hardware? I'd like to play classic (emulated) games on my television and watch movies.

I'm very close to dumping ATI and aRts altogether. Any other suggestions?
