Best way to deal with a windows user, just deep freeze them.

So they've got software that makes it impossible for Windows user to make permanent changes to their systems. Can't you just make people log into personal accounts and not give them administrator access? No extra software required!

That's how they do it where I work. I can't even install a printer without calling the help desk. Of course it doesn't always work, and it IS possible to break important stuff if you really try, but that's Windows for you. :)

You can freeze a machine but still leave an area to save data to. Unfortunately, there are some users who still manage to screw things up within their own profile.. Where I used to work we only froze student machines, Most of the instructor and staff machines were fairly locked down, but maybe not as much as they should of been.Instructors had more clout with management than IT did. I would have liked to have frozen one or two instructor and staff machines where the user was very knowledgeable but were only computer tech wannabe's.. We had one user where we actually had to lock the machine so the user could not get physically into it. He thought he could fix or improve things himself and usually only caused more work for us. He finally got the hint. I only had to do that once in ten years.

A user should only be able to destroy stuff in their "My documents" folder. If they do, Oh well. Restore it to a default state and let them start over. After a while they'll get tired of losing stuff and quit breaking their system.

There is always the usability vs control issue to deal with. Might as well only use thin clients. Essentually even on-line game machines are becoming just that if ms and sony had their wayt That would solve everything.. It makes you really appreciate ltsp. Maddog has some interesting thoughts on that subject. Anyway, I do not really have to deal with windows boxes anymore.
