higher bit rate ogg file
There have been requests for a higher bit rate ogg file. Pat has produced a few of those and we are looking at a doubling in file size. While we have no problem with this we want to get feedback from our listeners and mirror hoster's if this will be an issue. Right now the standard ogg clocks in at about 30-35 mb; the hbr ogg would be betwee 65-70mb on average.
This would be a replacement of the standard ogg file.

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
I've listened to both (mp3 and ogg) and I think the current quality is fine. I don't need a higher bitrate for just voice, personally. Even the songs are the end sound fine.
From a mirror perspective though, I don't object to the bigger file. I've got the space and the bandwidth to spare.

Have you guys thought of trying FLAC? Imagine hearing Danns sexy voice without artefacts !!

Because we all want to hear every single detail of Dann's farts.allix wrote:Have you guys thought of trying FLAC?

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
I wouldn't think twice.
Any device that plays OGG should have enough space for it. As for downloading it there shouldn't be a problem too there.
Overall I think the sound quality has been improving.
Dann has changed something because I don't hear so much background noise.
I used to find that the recording was better when Pat or Alan did them because something went wrong on Dann's side. Maybe because Alan is always quiet.
P.S. To Dann: do you eat sometimes when you're on the show? It seemed that I heard some milk+cereals...

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
Maybe the fan Dann had went kaput. As for allans recording, I think it was stereo and at a higher rate, and I remember him mentioning going outside for a smoke, so i presumed he was recording on a laptop or in allans case a freedom hating macbook.

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
Have you tried experimenting with Speex at all? Speex is kind of like Ogg Vorbis except it's specifically designed for voice. It doesn't surpass Vorbis in fidelity, but it gives you really small file sizes.

Maybe you could try doing higher bit-rate Vorbis files for the people that want them, along with Speex files for the bandwidth impaired. It would probably end up being about the same amount of bandwidth as you're using now.
So you could do,
Ultra-low bandwidth Speex
MP3s for the people that need them
Higher quality Ogg Vorbis for the rest
Just a thought.

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
the problem with speex or flaac is that I don't know of any players that support them. Targeting ogg and mp3 seems ideal because regardless of the player, catering to the lowest common technology is mp3. It's not that I have no desire to use flaac or speex; but 4 different file formats is a lot of work in addition to taking up a lot more file space and bandwidth.

Just out of curiosity, do you know if MP3 downloads have declined?
Re: higher bit rate ogg file
You could put the less used formats on archive.org and keeping the primary formats on the mirrors.

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
if you are going to up the quality of the ogg, will the same be done for mp3?

Re: higher bit rate ogg file
I think your current bit rate is a major improvement over the 8-track tapes that you guys had back in the 70's. By the way, speaking of 8-track tapes, I picked up Linc's greatest hits at a garage sale the other day. I like the Rhinestone Cowboy remix that is on it. Linc has a set of pipes, that's for sure.

Alright! I smell something.
Re: higher bit rate ogg file
I think decreasing the quality of the mp3 so its so rotten and unbearable to hear that they have no excuse but to use the free formatsTsuroerusu wrote:Most likely not.aardkwak wrote:if you are going to up the quality of the ogg, will the same be done for mp3?
