I ran into the same problem as Allan with the router that had a reduced amount of flash. A few months later (early 2007) I found out that the DD-WRT group had found a way to get around it with a 'micro' edition. There is an extra step involved by running something called the VXWorksKiller, but overall it works great. DD-WRT just released an update and it too has a micro edition available.

Re: WRT54G v5 can be flashed
That's all true, however the problem is that the micro edition can't do nearly as much as the standard version of DD-WRT, as can be seen in this table: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wh ... e_Versions
If you want to be absolutely sure, that you can hack the Linksys router that you buy, get the one called WRT54GL, notice the "L" at the end, take a wild guess what that means!
Linksys brought that one out, after they switched the main line of WRT54G to VxWorks, specifically for people like you and me, who want to hack the router.

That is true, or one could buy a buffalo or other supported models. I just wanted to make sure that Allan (and others) knew that they could put linux on one more device.
Also the "limited functionality" of the dd-wrt micro edition is better than the default firmware. I rely on the QoS feature to make sure my VOIP connection is rock solid.
