Just curious how many downloads you guys get each week, and how many listen to the live stream.

We don't keep weekly statistics. You can view the montly statistics, which are updated daily for the current month at:

<a href="http://www.tllts.info/mp3stats">mp3 stats</a>

<a href="http://www.tllts.info/oggstats">ogg stats</a>

What this will give you is the amount of data transferred for each file (look at the top 10 ULR's by Kbytes. If you take that number and divide it by the size of the episode in kbytes you get the a value that represents the number of files that were downloaded based on the amount of data transferred.

For episode 106 the mp3 file size is 19081 and the kbytes transferred for 106 is 18386737 giving us the equivalent of the file being downloaded 963 times.

If there is a better way of finding out or if we are figuring this out wrong do let us know.

I do some mirroring for LUGRadio and have inspected the logs from time to time. I've found that probably half the hits I get are not complete downloads. Some people retry 3 or 4 times before they get a complete download. Google bots will hit the mp3 and ogg files and get maybe 100k of the file before they cancel the download.

Counting data transfer versus counting hits is a good idea, but I'd say a ballpark figure is 20-30% of your traffic is partial downloads. It just depends on how you want to count. When you throw in the the downloads from your mirrors, your total listeners is probably higher.

I run some scripts to filter out most bots.

I'm not sure how I would check for partial downloads. That's way I say according to the logs the data transfer is equivalent to xxx number of downloads. We cannot say show 105 was downloaded xxx number of times.

The only way to do it would be to write a script to filter the logs, look for the name of a specific episode, grep out the field that shows how many bytes were transferred, match it to a know total and decide if this is a complete download. I've thought about it, but it's just too much work for too little payoff. You'd have to run it every day and tally totals somehow.

In the end, your method of dividing data by the size of the file is probably only a few percent off the real total. I'm not even sure discounting partial downloads is a good idea. If someone downloads 99% of the show, is that a download or not? It's hard to decide what to measure.
