cheap web cams

Fry's has some refurbished webcams for 15 dollars, Logitech Quickcam for nb deluxe refurbished. 1280x960.
I plan to get a couple for setting up a test security system.

I doubt very much your be able to use that webcam as 1280x960 on linux.

I use a dell xps m1330 laptop with a built-in cam on vista, the resolution was something like what you mentioned , on linux its 320x400 or whatever the is standard low vga..

You are probably right, but redhat is promising better webcam support from what I hear. I did get one of the units and it worked without having to install a driver. By the way, what is Vista?

Fedora 10 mentions that...

It does not mention anything to do with supporting higher resolution though .
Also what vista does, it supports motion detection with some albeit silly images like masks that when a person moves a head the masks moves with it.
I think Cheese is starting to develop this using opengl..
