India Smoking Ban

This was wierd. I am listening to RFI from Paris and reading news.bbc.co.uk and reading about the smoking ban in India and then they start talking about it on the radio at the same time. Creepy. Anyway, what is your opinion on smoking bans?

I have mixed opinion on it.
For a non-smoker I have a somewhat weird opinion but I think people should be free to smoke in public places.
The smell and tobacco is of course bad but if people want to do it , its up to them.

Well, there's a fundamental difference between private business and "public", government-owned places. The Indian government has the right to do whatever they want with their state-owned institutions, but banning business owners from permitting smoking is a blatant violation of property rights.

I have mixed feeling about this. People should have the right to do what they please. Unfortunately, there is a health issue involved. I know several people who are either allergic to cigar/cigarette smoke or have asthma. It has been proven that the smoke is decremental to your health. It may not kill you right away but it will have a serious affect on non-smokers. In Houston for many years, there were no rules. I remember my ex giving me the riot act when I would kindly ask people not to smoke around me. It makes me violently cough and etc.. She would get upset when I asked if we could leave when I could not breathe. I guess she thought I was putting on an act. I used to mimic Robin Williams and skits from snl. The ironic part is that not long after we were not together anymore, the laws were changed to prevent smoking in most public places. Rumor has it that some city council members witnessed the episode between me and my ex who at that time was not a smoker. Cigarette smoke makes my clothes smell like people with body odor and harder to wash. While staying at my brothers house during ike, his mother and wife were smoking when I was not around. I still could smelll that crap. I almost died up there. I was so glad to get back home even if there was no electricity. At least I could breathe. Personally I wish they would allow smoking over there so the sooner they all go kaput or kill each other over it..
