Excellent article from Wired:

I've heard so much about this stuff and have never actually tried it. Apparently the craziness is caused by a toxin (thujone) naturally present in one of it's ingredients.
Anyone actually drink this stuff?

Yes. Both commercial and home brew. It's entirely over rated -- take a soma (or whatever) and drink a few shots of vodka and a "rockstar" (or whatever) and you'll be on about the same level. The poisoning takes a long time though, meaning you have to drink lots of the stuff over a long period of time before it's an issue. Personally, I'm surprised it's so notorious while laudanum and/or "jake" are more or less unknown. The latter two certainly fucked a lot more people up.
Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased; thus do we refute entropy.
