Now, after two years of development, we are proud to announce that Amarok 2 has arrived. This arrival is just the beginning.
This new version brings with it a lot of changes:
Completely redesigned user interface
* Tight integration with online services such as Magnatune, Jamendo, MP3tunes, Last.fm and Shoutcast
* Completely overhauled scripting API and plugin support to allow better integration into Amarok
* Migration from the KDE 3 to KDE 4 framework, and utilization of core technologies such as Solid, Phonon, and Plasma

It is important to note that Amarok 2.0 is a beginning, not an end. Because of the major changes required, not all features from the 1.4 are in Amarok 2. Many of these missing features, like queueing and filtering in the playlist, will return within a few releases. Other features, such as visualizations and support for portable media players, require improvements in the underlying KDE infrastructure. They will return as KDE4's support improves. Some features, such as the player window or support for databases other than MySQL, have been removed because either they posed insurmountable programming problems, or they didn't fit our design decisions about how to distinguish Amarok in a saturated market of music players.

This has been out for a while. I've been running it on my system for 2 months. It came with Mandriva 2009 power pack. I guess that's why they name them in the future they contain future software or something. Weird!

If you look at the announcement on the source link I posted you notice "Submitted by nightrose on December 10, 2008 - 14:39", it just came out today, you must have been running the RC.

You're probly right, I did just install a giant update for my system. It must have included the official Amarok 2.

Anybody know if Amarok2 imports the settings, such as the podcast playlist, from version 1.4.
Or does it just carry on using the same instance of the back-end database?

It will import some things, not everything though, so backup your settings before messing with it.

This is interesting. Because it will not. Amarok used to use SQLite, but that just didn't scale in the end, so they have switched to using MySQL, so it's using a more efficient backend.

Amarok 1.x had a problem (quiting early on a song) with mt-daap servers aka firefly . Has that been fixed? I know even rhythmbox , you have to identify server to get the playlist now.

I'll have to cross my fingers that the 80 or so entries in my podcasts playlist get imported over to 2.0. Just thinking about having to put all the links in manually is making me think I should have thought how I was going to move to a different feed catcher later. Maybe, I'll have to give bashpodder a look!
