Well, companies have a formula for severance packages, and if they overpaid they are due their money back. I'm sure the severance was quite generous. If anything, it's embarrassing they miscalculated it in the first place. And I'd imagine M$ would be like my corporation where you have extras like money towards starting a business, or paying for education, which you could claim in addition to your severance.
