Ok ... I give up ... what does the lyx option or function do? Give you document portability for other editors ... I imagine?

www.lyx.org can give better details than I can. Yes, we use it as a document processor.

When not using OpenOffice to create documents, I use plain text files in vim for most of my writing. Plain text files don't have formatting that messes up the secretary when she is putting my written information into another document or newsletter. Also plain text can be easily sent by email or other means.

Instead of using the Lyx route and Latex, I have used Asciidoc which always you to create some nicely formatted documents in html using simple mark-up in the plain text file. There is simplistic beauty in plain text files and using an "interpreter" to make the document beautiful.
