My sentiment exactly!Judland wrote:The only issue I have with people, like Leo, is that many people do consider them an authority on things. When authoritative people pass out bad or incomplete information about Linux, it does us (as a community) more harm than good, I feel.
I'd rather Leo just say "I don't know enough about Linux to give you good advice, so I won't comment. However, here's where you can get good information it.... (plug favorite Linux site here)."

Natively, it's true. By installing Xiph Quicktime Components you get Ogg in iTunes.Jza wrote:I think leo is all about iTunes and iTunes doesnt read the ogg file-type. So I guess he didnt want to encapsulate it.
BTW, I do use Gentoo and Windows on a dualboot desktop PC, and also an iBook running Mac OS X. I prefer ogg due to my Nokia 6630 phone with a 1GB card (using OggPlay).
Main reason for using Ogg: same audio quality (at least for me), using an inferior bitrate. I want to be able to go more time without having to upload unheard podshows to my cellphone card (which is an overhead).
To be honest, I am not really interested in the current Ogg feeds, as both MP3 and Ogg formats are at the same bitrate, and as there aren't automatic file conversion interfaces of podcasts in iTunes-like Podcast Audio Applications as to downgrade to Ogg 32kbit/s (-1 Ogg Quality). Podcasts are great to listen to during transportation, house keeping chores, gym, etc, so quality isn't such an issue as you already have background noise which reduces the "HiFi experience". Even doing manual conversions in GUI apps like Ogg Drop X have 0 as the minimum quality (~64kbit/s).
Yeah, well, I could write a script which called LAME to do that, but I'm currently not up for it.
I use iTunes in Mac so I can use a SOCKS proxy (for download limits saving purposes). amaroK is my FLOSS choice in Linux, but I can't use it due to the inability (possibly mine) to configure KDE to use the SOCKS proxy.
OGG RSS Feed
I put together a little PHP script to make a RSS feed for the OGG version.
I just through it on my webserver and put the url for it in my padcatcher. Works good enough for me.
I would host it as a feed myself, but I don't have the bandwith.
Code: Select all
<?php
echo str_replace("<title>FLOSS Weekly</title>","<title>FLOSS Weekly -- OGG-Vorbis Version</title>",
str_replace(".mp3",".ogg",file_get_contents("http://leoville.tv/podcasts/floss.xml")));
?>I would host it as a feed myself, but I don't have the bandwith.

Just tested it out, and it works great!

Since I have the bandwidth here is it for everyone who wants to use it (I even have 2 versions):
http://kamiware.org/floss_ogg.xml
http://kamiware.com/floss_ogg.php
(However it can take a second before the server gives the information back)

You have to use Yahoo pipes (link below). Leo's Linux knowledge has dropped since he stopped doing the TV shows which were keeping him in the loop to a degree. I think he is so busy now that he doesn't have time to play with Linux, and we know he's a Mac fan boy for sure. The show has gotten a lot better with Linux coverage and guests. Paul Frields is going to be on when the new Fedora drops as well as "Flossing with Bacon" (Jono) episodes to come.

I have to agree with you. It seems that the hostility towards GNU/Linux is subsiding, especially from Randal himself. I remember when the show wasn't being put out as often that he seemed very much against highlighting GNU/Linux on the show, but the last few shows have highlighted people that are active in the GNU/Linux community. The reaction has also been more friendly and not as indifferent to those involved in the GNU/Linux community. That said, I would like to see some more BSD coverage as well. I was even thinking of having them speak to Will Backman who provides an excellent podcast focused on the BSDs. And of course, someone has to bring up our favorite TLLTS guys to be interviewed, especially since they interviewed Leo early on.jturning wrote:You have to use Yahoo pipes (link below). Don't hold your breath. I can't envision an invite from them any time soon.Claudio wrote:And of course, someone has to bring up our favorite TLLTS guys to be interviewed, especially since they interviewed Leo early on.

Check the spreadsheet linked from twit.tv/floss of upcoming guests. If you have a suggestion, email me the email address of the person you want on, and I'll add them to the list. Now that Jono Bacon is co-hosting, if the show is more about Linux, i'll probably schedule it when he can be on.
Re: FLOSS Weekly Ogg feed
Look at that, right from the man himself! You want a guest on you propose that guest.
Now really, I don't see why anyone would want to hear any of us on FLOSS. I mean come on, what the heck do we do?

Re: FLOSS Weekly Ogg feed
They would get to hear the awesome fun we hear on every exciting episode of TLLTS every Wednesday night. All with the grilled chickens and Dann's connection dropping every 5 minutes. Don't forget to make sure Gorkon is on with you guys that night so he can blow out everyone's ears.dann wrote:Look at that, right from the man himself! You want a guest on you propose that guest.

Re: FLOSS Weekly Ogg feed
Just checked out merlyn's spreadsheet.
I'm overwhelmed. Too many guests.... too many vested interests.

Re: FLOSS Weekly Ogg feed
Randal (if you're still lurking about
), since you now have Jono as the GNU/Linux guy on the panel, have you thought about having someone from the BSD camp available? I know that you run OpenBSD on a server when you mentioned it from your last TLLTS interview, but maybe someone that uses an open source BSD regularly?

Re: FLOSS Weekly Ogg feed
I just read this thread, sorry to repost on an old one, but it struck me that no one seemed to mention that TWiT has had an ogg feed for years: http://leoville.tv/podcasts/twit-ogg.xml -- not that it's worth listening to these days. It is a little surprising that the "mainstream" show (TWiT) has the ogg feed, but the FLOSS show doesn't.
What does Jono Bacon do? Nothing against Jono, butso far as I know his main claim to fame is that he (used to) have a podcast.dann wrote:Now really, I don't see why anyone would want to hear any of us on FLOSS. I mean come on, what the heck do we do?
