Need Help On Switching From XP to Slack 10.2 on Dell CPX
I have a Dell CPX J650GT that has been running XP Pro for about a year now. I decide since my Compaq Deskpro PIII 500mhz has been running slackware for also a year, I would just make the final leap and have all my machines run nix. The only problem I have right now is getting my wifi card and dial-up modem to work. The Modem is a Xircom Realport2 56K Win-GlobalACCESS model# R2BM56WGA. The wifi card is a D-Link G650 with an atheros chipset. I'm hoping the dial-up modem will work. I know the wifi card shouls since i have used knoppix on the laptop and it saw it. I think I just need to load/install some drivers. Still a newb to linux. Thanks for any help.
Supposedly your card works, and if you got it working in Knoppix; then you should be able to get it working under slackware, although you may need to do a few steps.
What version is the card? Version A takes a different driver than versions B & C: http://tinyurl.com/z2lh
As for the Modem, I could not find anything definitive on that exact chipset. I've not played around with modems for a good many years. Maybe someone else has some advice.

Thanks Dann. I forgot it was MADWIFI that I needed. I figured the modem was going to be tougher to get to work with nix if at all. I think I will just buy a cheap modem that I know works off of ebay. I can't believe how freakin sweet slackware looks on this laptop. Now I just need to get a bigger hard rive and it will be even better. Thanks again Dann.

;also, there's a very thorough description of configuring a dell latitude cpx j series on redhat. the hardware seems very similar, so you can very likely glean the necessary config info from there.

Thats what i'm getting for lspci for the modem. I already have pcmcia-cs installed. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy a modem on enay that is known to work.

Well it looks like nothing will be running on this laptop now. The screen is shot. I took the laptop apart and found that the connector for the scren is fried. I don't feel like spending money on getting a new screen when I can get a new laptop. At least I have an excuse now to get a new laptop. Now if only i can find a good deal on a ibm. Thanks for all the help.

Well it seems i can get a used screen that has a warrenty from ebay for 79.00. Looks like I am going to go shopping today. For some reason, I thought they would be more expensive for the LCD screens. I can't wait till i get this laptop up and running with slack. Although Kubuntu is looking good too.
