How do all you Linux users get your music?

For me, if there's something new I want to listen to, I'll go out and buy the CD, rip it to FLAC for archival purposes, and make MP3's for use on my iPod. I haven't really gotten into the whole buying music online trend. Buying CDs allows me to have a perfect master backup of all the music I rip, and I don't have to deal with DRM, and low quality downloads. Even when I was a Windows user, I always felt that Apple was ripping people off with their low bitrate 128k DRM-ed AAC downloads. Magnatune is great, in that they don't restrict what you can do with your music, but because of that, you won't find any big name artists, or bands. I'm assuming everyone else here is pretty much in the same boat as I am.

True, but I don't think they'll ever have any effect on a Linux box.

Hi,

I normally listen to streaming mp3 using xmms and shoutcast, there's so much good, high bit rate music to choose from that you'll never get bored. If I want to save something for later, then I'll use something like mp3stream ripper.

I also agree that i-tunes is a bit of a rip off, only offering 128k bit rate when to match cd quality you really need more than that.

So if I want to buy music, I'll just order the cd - most of my cd playing is done in the car, so no need to worry about DRM or rootkits there!

My opinion is most of the music I hear being made these days is crap. So, I'm always on the lookout of replacing old LP's, 45's and cassettes I used to have so I can enjoy the music I liked the most.

Most of our music comes from allofmp3.com these days, with a few albums from Magnatune.

What little new music I get I buy on CD. I have about a dozen songs from iTunes that I can't find elsewere or don't want to buy the whole CD.

I rarely buy music at all, though, because it's just too expensive. I mostly am into underground/alternative Christian music, and it's hard to find anything for less than $19 a CD.

Ocassionally I listen to http://www.di.fm which streams various flavors of techno/trance/whatever for free.

But mostly I just listen to podcasts.

With much gnashing of teeth do I get music. Essentially, I will buy and rip a cd. I don't listen to that much music anymore, sticking mostly wiith Podcasts.

Aside from the aforementioned services you can also get itunes purchasing working under Linux using Sharpmusique. It's a pita though.

Connecting your player can also be a pita. Those that act as mass storage devices are the best. The iriver was not that bad, there is the ifp-lib project and the gtk-ifp or something for a graphical interface. iPods suck. While it is not that hard to get going, sometimes they can be problematic and require some extra steps (especially if the device is formated in the hfs+ file system).

Nope they have OGG, MP3, MP4, WMA, and MPC. I would assume they do not offer FLAC is because it is a losseless codec and could get a cheaper lower sampled bitrate and it would still sound good

OK, someone want to let me in on how to use that with Linux? The site sayws you need a windows client installed???

That's only if you want to use their "Explorer" download manager. I just drag and drop file links to my Kget client and I'm golden. No big deal.
