Alright I'm pulling my hair out. I have a Logitech MX300 mouse which is a rather basically optical wheel mouse that I usually use with a USB-PS/2 adapter.
I installed Arch Linux and the mouse devices will not give me any cat output, this includes /dev/psaux, /dev/input/mice, /dev/input/mouse0. If I use SLAX live disc the mouse works out of the box fine. So for the sake of exploration I go and install debian. The exact same problem. I even went as far as to compile my own kernel to make sure my kernel had the mouse modules.
So I basically just give up and pull the PS/2 adapter off the mouse and use it as a USB mouse, works instantly...
WTF?
And when I'm at it is anyone else having issues with the nv xorg drivers with a 7800GT PCI-E (no, a 7800GT is not overkill for Tux Racer
)? Whenever I try to run it with nv I just get a artifact filled screen and then a dead Xorg freeze. Vesa works fine though.

I'm not sure about this but could the mouse problem be related to a driver issue?
When you boot up Slax Live, what's listed as your mouse driver when you do a "lsmod"?
If you can find what Slax Live detects your USB mouse as, perhaps you can then do a modprobe under Arch or Debian to get it work properly.
Just an idea, as I had to do the same thing for my sound card once before.

With a video card like that, you'd benefit greatly from installing the official NVIDIA Linux driver from
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html . I would give that a shot unless you're on PPC.

I have a MX700 and with the PS/2 adapter it shows up as /dev/input/mouse0. When I cat on mine I have to move it to get any output. For the video problems I would suggest what Wally Balljacker said, just get the proprietary drivers from nvidia they are faster anyways. Make sure you use the nvidia module after installing it instead of the nv one.
