Underground / Arch Linux Install Manual

In case anyone's interested in giving Arch Linux a try, but still feel intimidated by the command line, I've put together a manual that takes you through an install of Underground Desktop.

You're more than welcome to download a free copy of the manual, in PDF format, here. Just scroll down the page, till you see the "Download PDF" icon.

The manual covers the installation of Underground Desktop v0.21 (based on the latest Arch Linux 0.71 distro.).

This is the first edition, so it can only get better.

I haven't had time to read your how-to yet, so this might be answered in there, but is the only fs option reiser4? I'd be extremely unlikely to recommend it to anyone if this is the case - not that I can say there is anything wrong with it, but it's certainly unproven.

Oh, and have you taken a look at frugalware? It's supposed to be a slack offshoot that uses pacman, and one of the graphical frontends for it that are similar to synaptic. It sounds interesting to me, but I've been awfully short on time recently - no week off for this boy.

Yes, this current version of UD is using Reiser4. However, after an e-mail conversation with the developer, this will most likely change to Reiserfs3 in the next release.

So far I haven't seen any problems with Reiser4 on the two systems that I'm running UD on. On my older system (PII) I'm even using a second hard drive to store my /swap partition. No problems, even though I've read that some people have experienced problems with Resier4 on multi-hd systems.

Nope, haven't tried Frugalware. For now, I'm pretty content.

Nice job with the manual. I'll probably use it this weekend when I install Linux on my dad's machine. Linux along with the router I got him for Christmas should make his internet experience much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the positive feedback, Pat. Much appreciated. I hope you find it useful.

I'll be keeping notes and making additions/improvements in the coming months for future versions. I'll try and keep up with future releases of UD (next one estimated for late February or March).

Of course, because of the copyright I chose, anyone can take what I've done and build upon it themselves if they wanted to.
