Nah, you know they'll cut out more features and delay the thing into 2007 and go "No No, don't go with that Lajnix and FreeBFD stuff, Vista it's gonna be waayyy better, just wait for 2007!!".Patrick wrote:Happy New Year everyone! It'll be the year of Vista too!
Seriously though, don't be surprised if Vista makes onto the vaporware list they usually do at the end of the year.

I think the reason Vista is taking so long to come out, is simply because they know and have admitted Windows XP is broken, and need to rewrite the entire OS from the ground up. As much as I dislike Microsoft and Windows, I have a feeling Vista will be a success. Even the user interface is starting to shape up.Tsuroerusu wrote:Nah, you know they'll cut out more features and delay the thing into 2007 and go "No No, don't go with that Lajnix and FreeBFD stuff, Vista it's gonna be waayyy better, just wait for 2007!!".Patrick wrote:Happy New Year everyone! As long as they have to maintain compatibility with older applications, Windows will always be fundementally broken, they need to rewrite the ENTIRE operating system from scratch, and not use a single line of sourcecode from their current codebase. The reason BSD and Linux is as good as they are today is because they were written the right way from the beginning and is so flexible that you can just evolve the OS instead of rewriting it. I wouldn't be surprised if there still are some Windows NT4 code in Vista.Wally Balljacker wrote:I think the reason Vista is taking so long to come out, is simply because they know and have admitted Windows XP is broken, and need to rewrite the entire OS from the ground up. Also, Windows will have DRM built right into the kernel, samething with Mac OS X Leopard, so I think a lot of users will be turned off by that shit, because I don't want my OS to limit my freedom to do anything I want, that's like having a cop behind your back all time!

Actually there are parts of the kernel that have been totally rewritten several times. Linux wasn't gold from the start they just stuck to a very well planned out system/principles, UNIX. UNIX does not insure that you have a good OS to start out with but the principles help later on. Like keeping everything thats a configuration file in the /etc directory helps users and system admins however the OS still has to be secure and stable. I don't think any of the code from kernel 0.99 is still in there but the principles have stayed the same so lossing backwards compatiblity was never a real problem for Linux (or any other UNIX for that matter)Tsuroerusu wrote:The reason BSD and Linux is as good as they are today is because they were written the right way from the beginning and is so flexible that you can just evolve the OS instead of rewriting it.

I know, but instead of writing a whole OS full of mistakes and errors like Microsoft did, the Linux developers just rewrote what needed to rewritten as they went along, same thing is gonna be true with KDE. Their multimedia architecture, aRts, is being trashed for something new and better. One of the guys at LugRadio seem to think the KDE developers should start from scratch for version four, which is plain ridiculous, KDE is flexible enough to just evolve.CptnObvious999 wrote:Actually there are parts of the kernel that have been totally rewritten several times. Yeah, look at Mac OS X's Server performance, it's just a mess, Linux on the same hardware whoops OS X's ass.CptnObvious999 wrote:UNIX does not insure that you have a good OS to start out with but the principles help later on.
Absolutely, if you wanted to make a UNIX system with as many bugs and design mistakes as Windows you sure could.CptnObvious999 wrote:Like keeping everything thats a configuration file in the /etc directory helps users and system admins however the OS still has to be secure and stable.
UNIX's history is full of incompatibility, for example try running a program developed for AIX on HP-UXCptnObvious999 wrote:I don't think any of the code from kernel 0.99 is still in there but the principles have stayed the same so lossing backwards compatiblity was never a real problem for Linux (or any other UNIX for that matter)
