Yeah, I totally agree with you, I hate having Windows forced on me, it's just horrible, no virtual desktops, no Firefox, no XMMS, no MPlayer, no KDE, AARRRHHHHHH!!!!! FµCK WINDOWS!!!

Firefox is available for Windows, and XMMS is a direct clone of Winamp. I agree Windows sucks, but there's no shortage of applications for it.

That's a good idea, I need to do that, the only problem is that my last USB thimbdrive is fried, I think a chip inside it is burned, it sure smells like that.

Ummm... there's a completely workable command line in Windows. XP and NT are far better than 98, but it's still usable. I use the Windows command line all the time (now that I've got Vim and Perl installed

True however it lacks so much Linux has. Mostly GREP, autocompletion, and pipes. It doesn't have the necessary tools to administer a machine properly.

Yeah and you know what you don't have the feature of hitting the Tab key to complete a filename, I hate that.

Thats what I ment by autocomplete when you hit tab it completes the filenames and commands. DOS has always been an ugly commandline IMO. Linux (or *NIX forthat matter) is very polished and powerful while still being easy to use for the most part (for being commandline).

I certainly preffer UNIX, but FreeDOS is OK, I've tried running it on some older machines, it ran games that MS-DOS couldn't

Windows does have tab completion. I have not used it in a while, but I think it just autocompletes what is in your path, not that you could have it cycle through commands.

But did you make the necessary registry adjustments? I think there is a tool to do this automatically. Been a while.

Nope, the registry is a little like Tokyo, it's impossible to find a single thing in there unless you designed the thing. What I did last time I hacked a little with Windows is that I just installed bash under Windows

I tried out ktorrent, very nice. I especially like the built-in torrent search function. Ktorrent is definitely lighter than Azureus. I think I might switch over.

Windows XP does indeed have command line completion. It's not as good as Linux, but it's there. My Windows box is locked down and I can't edit the registry, so for me it's there out of the box. Command history with the arrow keys has been in DOS for a while, although you had to enable it in older versions with DOSKEY.

Pipes and redirection have been in DOS for a long time, also. (try doing 'tree | more') I know they were there in MS-DOS 6.x, and probably as far back as 3.21.

There is no grep, but the find command does more or less the same thing.

I hate Windows as much as anybody, but I have to work with it, so I take advantage of what's there.

Well there is a native Windows port of Blackbox, you could install that and have a lighter desktop

You still have to run the Windows GUI underneath it. You'd be using even more system resources by running both.
