Apple announces Intel Macs

Post by Tsuroerusu » Tue Jan 10, 2006 2:04 pm

OSNews has some news on Apple's Intel migration:
"Apple's Steve Jobs has announced several new products today during his keynote at MacWorld (photos). After the usual chit-chat about the success of the retail stores and iTunes, Jobs got to the meat of the matter. He announced an FM-tuner with remote-control for the Nano/Video iPod. Read more for the really interesting stuff!

Now, on to what really interests us:
Mac OS 10.4.4: released today with new widgets;
iLife '06: released today ($79, free on new Macs), better podcasting support in GarageBand, and 'photocasting' in iPhoto;
iWeb: added to iLife '06, an application with which you can share photos, movies, music, blogs, and more (.Mac only; sort of 'website builder');
iWork '06: available today ($79, 30-day trial on new Macs);
That pretty much sums up the software part. Then, Jobs wants to talk systems, and Intel's CEO Paul Otellini appears in a cloud of smoke.
The first Apple Intel machine will be the iMac: it features the same design as the latest iMac G5, including Front Row, iSight camera, the same screensizes, and the same price-- however, 2 to 3 times faster, using an Intel Duo processor, shipping today;
OSX and iLife/iWork, and applications that come with it, are universal binaries and thus run natively on Intel processors;
Apple's Pro applications will be universal by March 2006, and you can trade in an old version for the universal one and receive a $49 rebate;
Microsoft is on track to release universal binaries of Office and Messenger;
Apple will transition all Macs to Intel this year.
And of course, the inevitable 'One more thing...'.
A new laptop: MacBook Pro: featuring an Intel Core Duo processor, and a 15.4" screen;
Obviously thinner and faster than the previous PowerBook ('fastest notebook ever'), and also includes a built-in iSight, and Remote control/Front Row;
1.67 Ghz Core Duo: $1999, 1.83 Ghz Core Duo: $2499, can be ordered as of today, but will be shipping in Februari.
That about wraps it up for the keynote. I'd like to thank both World Of Apple and MacRumors for their hard work on providing live feeds!"

It's not that I want an Intel Mac, hell no, I just think this is an interesting subject.

Yeah I was actually kind of like that too, but of course, someone had to post it and it might just be me right? But still I think Bill is pissing his pants right now :wink:
Let's hope KDE4 can beat Windows and OS X :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

So how much faster will an Apple that sells for $2000 be than my $550 Balance (2.4 ghz) laptop running Arch Linux? I wouldn't be surprised if they're made in the same factory.

Hehe, I doubt it'll be faster, Apple says it's twice as fast as the older PowerPC based machines, which really proves the "Steve Jobs reality distortion" teory is true, Steve spent years trying to brainwash us all into believing the PowerPC totally 0wned anything from Intel and AMD, not so sure about that now huh, I actually look forward to hear how fast that Rosetta PPC emulation will run, because I've always experienced emulation as very slow, especially when emulating modern CPU architectures.

By the way Pat, what CPU does your laptop have? I doubt Apple's machines are faster, but you can't convince them Mac whores standing outside Steve's bedroom right? :lol: :lol: :lol:

Yeah and then go a distro of Linux and install on it, that way you'll have an OS more stable than OS X :wink:

That microkernel design of OS X is horrible for servers, I've seen a lot of benchmarks where Linux just choked OS X when it ran a very busy Apache and MySQL web server.

I have a little feeling into the future though, Apple might just release OS X into the wild so it can be installed on any x86 PC when people start pirating it like mad, and stuff like that, that way they can make some doe on selling it for generic x86 machines. Dann has sometimes brought up the question "Does Apple's move to Intel threaten Linux?" on the show, I don't see the current present events from doing that, but if Apple ever released OS X for generic PCs, I do think we in the Linux community might find our asses wooped for the home-consumer market, never for servers of course, but you never know, Apple might not do it and KDE4 might just kick Apple's ass, and maybe we will finally have this issue of newbies installing new software solved in a year or two, who knows, only time will tell.

You can get an iBook with 1GB of RAM, 100GB hard disk, Bluetooth, Airport, and a DVD burner for $1,500. I don't think Apple hardware is THAT expensive. I could certainly never buy a comparable ThinkPad with Windows XP for that price. Even the Intel iMac with 2GB of RAM, 17-inch LCD, SuperDrive, and 250GB hard disk is only $1,700.

Emulation? I thought all binaries from Apple now have native PPC and Intel support in the same package.

LOL, don't you think all the Photoshop addicts will whine if Photoshop wouldn't run? The Rosetta emulation layer will allow PPC binaries to be run, all NEW apps will be dual binary.

Eh, whatever. I want a new machine, and Apple makes nicer hardware than everyone else. Buying laptops with Linux preinstalled is ridiculously expensive, and I don't want to be forced to pay for Windows XP if I'm not going to use it. Atleast with an Apple, I get a fully functional OS that isn't full of security holes, looks amazing, and I can still boot into Linux whenever I want.

Proprietary hardware now with TPM chips, which can be, and probably will, be used for DRM purposes.

Wally Balljacker wrote:Buying laptops with Linux preinstalled is ridiculously expensive,
Yeah, and you can never get the distro you want preinstalled, by the way, are you afraid of installing Linux yourself?

Wally Balljacker wrote:and I don't want to be forced to pay for Windows XP if I'm not going to use it.
I hear you on that, who wants to pay for crappy products anyway!

Wally Balljacker wrote:Atleast with an Apple, I get a fully functional OS that isn't full of security holes, looks amazing,
Yeah proprietary, and full of DRM enforced with TPM, from a company that are against free speech.

Wally Balljacker wrote:and I can still boot into Linux whenever I want.
I guess, what if you can't? :lol:

Why not build one from scratch? Its not too hard and you can customize it as much as you want. I have almost completely rebuilt my computer from parts from Newegg and it is real fast. Every Christmas or birthday I have gotten a really good new part or two since I can't really afford a whole new computer at once.

I'd like to get a laptop, so building it myself is kinda out of the question. My desktop is fairly decent, I don't need to replace anything on that for atleast a couple more years. If I was looking to spend under $700, I would probably consider what Pat bought, but I should have around $1,600 within the next two weeks, so the iBooks/iMacs are right in my price range.
