System Beeps

Post by CptnObvious999 » Thu Jan 12, 2006 6:29 pm

I don't know who keeps beeping during the shows but it is annoying. I hate it when I tab to autocomplete and it beeps at me. I just unconnected my motherboard speaker so it would shutup so...just a suggestion  I don't want to seem bitchy and by all means I appreciate what you guys have done.

Does it irritate you 'cause, while listening to the show, you think it's your computer that's beepin at you?

Sometimes I'm caught checking my e-mail because of a beep I heard on the show.... Doh!

You could just blacklist pcspkr.

Pulling it out was easier ;-)

Personally I think it adds to the "I'm right there in that crowded, smelly room with the guys" feel that the show has. I can't count the number of podcasts I've been listening to and heard the Microsft Outlook "you have mail" noise in the background.

As far as the auto complete beep goes, I've never had it on a Fedora system. I'm pretty sure you can disable it in a bash config somewhere. Doesn't seem worth the trouble, though.

IIRC I had to load the pcspkr module in fedora. Personally, I'd much much rather have my pc speaker squak than have my soundcard powered speakers fill the room with sound. IMO, that's almost as bad as the god awful breaking glass error sound kde ships with.

If you want to disable the beep function in the terminal and you're using bash, you can just use the command 'setterm -blength 0' (add that to your .bashrc or .bash_profile file to make it permanent).

Hi by the way, I just started listening to the show a few weeks ago and it's at the top of my fav podcasts list. You guys are doing a great job keeping me entertained during the daily commute! I don't know how many belgian listeners you guys have, but I'm one of them.

Only Carlsberg. Not bad. What are some of the other brands?

There's Tuborg, another very widely known danish beer, Ceres and Wilbroe, those are the only ones I can think of right now, I don't drink myself, so I'm not that much into the beer stuff, but my uncle likes a good beer for dinner so he sometimes mentions a few names.
