The LVM tool looks pretty nice!! I may have to give FC another chance when FC 5 comes out on my workstation here at work. FC4 was nice I just hated adding 3 , 4 or even more different repositories just to get a working desktop with out breaking things by via "yum update"

People bitch about Fedora/RH but I would kill to have it (or any other linux distro) on my desktop at work. I'm working on changing that.

I'm in hostile territory here. ALL M$ baseline on the desktops. I'm only running NIX because my boss lets me since it pertains to my duties here as a Linux SA.

My boss and I may be the only ones running NIX here. I hope one day that will change too but I doubt it since this is the place where M$ submits requests (hint)

Patrick have y0u tried c0sm0p0d is a Fed0ra distr0 0ver nxclient (p0rt 4333), that way y0u can get y0ur Linux Break at w0rk.

I always ssh t0 my c0mputer at w0rk and w0rk fr0m the c0mmandline and it was great. I think that if I g0t a cygwin running 0n the winb0x and get t0 run x0rg I might even get my gui s0ftware running 0n the wincrap.

If IBM would put its money where its mouth is and make a flippin' linux notes client, I'd never have to use windows again. The absolute *only* reason I'm stuck using windws is notes. Well that and pc anywhere/remote desktop -- these are less important though, and IIRC there are some F/OSS options in this arena anyhow. Notes is the deal breaker though.

People bitch about fedora and redhat because it's 1337 to put down "the man" of the linux world. I'm sooooooooooo glad I'm running mostly redhat servers at this point it isn't even funny. I'm sure modern bsds are great, but running several flavors of olden-days bsd gives you a taste for why people used to hate unix so much pretty quickly. Even if you think RMS is a jackass, god bless him for the gnu toolchain - the bsd tools are/were, IMO, god awful. Again, I'm sure any newer bsds are probably better in this respect - sort of like opensolaris is a lot nicer than SunOS was.

didn't they do that with workspace? and lotus notes also runs on linux...

I think the products are there, is just your company are not buying them.

Domino runs on linux (I've installed it), but as far as I know Notes client does not. I haven't done a whole lot of research past being told that it doesn't, but the googling I did back then didn't look promising. There is a F/OSS copycat of sametime called meanwhile - I discovered that much back then.In any event, you are correct - it would take more than IBM releasing notes for linux -- it would take my company buying licenses too. I'm not buying software just so I can use linux at work. I'm not that much of a zealot, and I hardly interface with windows as it is.

Nope. I still don't see anything other than Mac or Windows. Mac would be a step in the right direction at least, but the likelihood of my company springing for a Mac is nil.

My company is sooo into Lotus Notes as well. Not so much for the email but for the workflow databases. They also export all the databases into the company intranet. If there was a linux client my goal of converting the desktops to linux would be much easier. Unfortunatly it's not. The options: running through an emulator such as crossover, win4lin, VMware Workstation/Player. I'm in the same boat as you guys.

FC4 was the first Fedora to have the extras repo enabled by default. The only other repo I had to enable was livna (accomplished by installing 1 package), which can't be enabled by default for obvious legal reasons. You can go the freshrpms/Dag/atrpms route if you want, but I've heard of people having a lot of problems that way, and I can get everything I need from the "official" repos.

They already have. As of FC4 Fedora uses the Gnome 2.10 default, which is Clearlooks. It's similar to Bluecurve, but was created specifically for Gnome 2.10. As far as I know Gnome in Fedora now follows upstream defaults.
