I'd Like To Make Arch My Main Workstation

So I've been dabbling with linux for a few years. Always on a spare computer and never really committed to replacing xp as my main workstation. I've run Gentoo, Suse, Ubuntu, and Kubuntu. Right now I have a smoothwall router and two Ubuntu machines running mythtv. But my main machine(Athlon 64, 1gig ram, x600 pcie ATI card) has been only xp.

Until now.

I took the plunge and put a second harddrive in my main machine and setup a dual boot. I installed ubuntu first on the second drive. If gnome and nautilus didn't make my skin crawl I'd almost be committed to using it. Kubuntu felt very buggy. So I also installed arch linux on that second drive after hearing about it on tllts and reading about it here. Well I'm hooked if I can get everything working that I need.

This leads to my first step. Getting the ATI drivers installed and working. Now I was able to follow a guide to get them working on ubuntu. But I'm confused how this is going to work on Arch. I'm using the stock kernel.

Is there a package that can be downloaded for the stock kernel?

If not.
What exactly does the ATI installer do? What files does it put where? Why do I seem to need to compile something after running the installer? How would I uninstall after running the install if need be?

The post about the driver package for stock kernel was made today so I hadn't seen it yet.
