Gonna give Slackware a whirl

Burning the 2 install discs now. I'm about to replace my older hard drive (4+ years old, still works, just need more space) with a new drive next week, and until that arrives I'm going to see how Slack runs. Time to see what Linc and Allan are always raving about!

Slackware is a solid distro, for sure. I've been running Slack 10.0 for quite some time now. I got my feet wet with Arch which taught me a lot about Linux so getting into Slackware and getting everything to work was relatively easy. Slackware is certainly smooth and crisp with no bloat or bs. I can see why so many like it.

On a related note, I am actually considering trying Arch on my old laptop this weekend if I can get around to it.

I'll be sadd if you fall in love with Arch and leave Slack behind. I almost didn't try Slack after you did your Ubuntu install with such glowing praise. Because you and Allan continued your Slack praise I installed Slack 10.2 two weeks ago. I really love it so far, but I have only done one compile. I compiled Katapult (Quicksilver copy for KDE) which went really well, and works great. I thought the learning curve might be too steep for me, but so far so good. I had a working fast KDE desktop in little time.

I do see a dark future if I want to try to stay current with KDE 3.5... or if I wanted to install MythTV or OpenOffice with compiling and trying to meet lots of dependances on my own.

Just curious why did you leave Arch for Slack? Seems that it usually happens the other way around.

KDE 3.5.1 is now in the slackware -current tree so you can upgrade to that now if you want. I recommend installing and using the "slackpkg" tool in /extra. Myth and OpenOffice packages are both in the linuxpackages.net repository.

Let me know how that goes for you Wally Balljacker, I just got a friend to give me an old PII 400 and I am going to download the iso's next weekend. It will be my test machine for hacking around. Want to play with arch as well, but have to concentrate on one at a time.

The install was about as simple and painless as it gets, although I got a Lilo error halfway through, and needed to boot from the install disc to fix Lilo. I decided to go with KDE as the default desktop, which runs pretty quick and snappy. I prefer GNOME, but I don't mind KDE at all. One thing that suprised me was that Pine and Java are installed by default which is kinda cool since Debian makes it somewhat difficult to do so.

Actually, if I had to choose one over the other, I would choose Arch. It just so happened I tried Arch (back in the ol' 0.6 days) before I ever tried Slackware.
