Nice review of VectorLinux 5.1.1 SOHO

Looks like another distro I need to try out. It's basically just Slackware with some nice desktop improvements, and a GTK frontend for Slapt-get, called GSlapt.

I was under the impression that the selling point of Vector was that it was compiled for newer processors (like Arch) and used stripped binaries for speed. I haven't looked at it for a while, though. It's supposed to be pretty fast.

Yeah, I read that the other day - it did a good job of selling vector. I wish someone would come out with a light-weight distro like that, aimed at lappys.

I recently resurrected an old Toshiba Satellite laptop at the office. Damn Small Linux and Vector Linux where the only two distros. (out of the half dozen that I tried) that installed properly on it.

So, being configured for only "newer" hardware doesn't seem to be the case.

Newer as in i686 versus i586 (or even 486). Lots of distros still include i586 compatibility in their packages.

Fedora compiles (kernels at least) with Pentium 4 optimizations, but i586 compatibility, so it's faster on newer hardware, but compatible all the way back to the Pentium.
