new podcast for Linux newbies

Post by Chess » Wed Feb 22, 2006 7:47 pm

Hey guys-

I've been thinking about this for quite some time, and I've finally done it -- I've launched a little podcast for newbie Linux users. I know that there used to be the GNU/Linux User Show, which I listened to quite a bit, but it's gone now and this is maybe just a little different anyway. It's intended to be more instructional, I guess, and to really start from the very beginning. I am going to explain what Linux is, the free software philosophy, the different types of distributions etc. I am going to explain how to use the command line because I think it's important for newbies to understand how to use the CLI. Basically, start from the beginning and take it slowly.

Here is the website: http://www.linuxreality.com

Anyway, I don't think this podcast is intended for anyone here in these forums or any TLLTS listener, but if you know of any real newbie Linux users out there, please consider suggesting that they check out the podcast. And if you do check it out, I would welcome any thoughts/comments/suggestions etc. You can post 'em here or send them my way at linuxreality@gmail.com.

One more thing: the audio isn't the best right now, but I'm working on it. It will get better.

Thanks -
Chess

Awesome! I wouldn't get them started with the command line in any of the first few episodes though because it tends to scare them away. Also wheres the OGG? Good luck with that it looks great. If you ever need any help with it I would be happy to help.

Getting looking website Chess, I wish you all the best! :D

By the way, if you're gonna recommend a distro on your podcast, I suggest you pick one that has what Windows users are used to, such as a complete GUI administration control panel, and all that stuff, I like SUSE myself (Which is what I use), and I also really like Mandriva. Those two are the ones I recommend, and use in the case of SUSE, to newbies.

Thanks, guys. I think it should be a fun thing to do. I just like to spread the word. If I can convince just a few folks to make the switch, then I'll consider it a success. And CptnObvious999, you're right... I need to add an OGG. :)

By the way, maybe you could have one of us come and tell your listeners about cool apps, for example, I'd love to do a segment on amaroK or good KDE stuff, being a KDE addict I know a lot of the apps

Sweet. I am always looking forward to new Linux podcasts. I will check your podcast out in a bit. I wish that there were more podcasts about Linux but that won't be changing anytime soon.

Yo Chess, just listened to the two episodes you've done, and oh man, good stuff dude! :D
Even my mum could understand what you're saying, you had a few naming mistakes here and there, for example you said that "the GNU tried to create an open source operating system", which, if you ask RMS, was incorrent they were trying to create a free operating system for the sake of the freedom of computer users everywhere.

Great podcast, I bet ya, if we show those Windows dopes out there all the amazing stuff that GNU/Linux, and maybe you could look at one of the new desktop-oriented BSDs (DesktopBSD and PC-BSD) which are very good too, can do I'm sure we'll catch the interest of a few of them, I hope someone will integrate amaroK with Magnatune ASAP, it may not have Madonna or Christina Aguilera, but it has a lot of good stuff and it's all DRM (Digital Restrictions Management, you know) free.

That's great, Chess. You go... and best wishes for success! :D

If you can help even ONE person move over to the Linux community, then I'd say you've succeeded.

I couldn't agree more, because that people might tell six of his friends about Linux and then they tell their friends :D

There are many linux-oriented podcasts/webcast since 2001 from countries like spain, mexico and argentina. I bet there are more somewhere else and I bet that probably there are also a bunch in french and japanese.

Thanks, guys, for the encouragement. It means a lot coming from the TLLTS community -- I really appreciate it.

I have received several emails from folks who have really enjoyed my first two episodes and who think it will help them switch, so that's cool.

In the next episode, I'm going to point out Linux-related websites, forums, etc. and I'm also going to mention other Linux podcasts, including my favorite, of course -- TLLTS! :) So, if you have any recommendations of good Linux-related websites, news sites, forums etc. that are good for newbies, please feel free to let me know. So far, I'm going to point out linuxquestions.org, lxer.com, desktoplinux.com, justlinux.com, and linuxforums.org. I'm also going to point folks to TUX magazine, which is a fantastic resource, IMHO.

Anyway, thanks again for the comments, guys. If you have any suggestions or feedback, I am all ears.

Sounds great man, by the way, just curious are you gonna have a static distro that you're gonna recommend, for example I know that Marcel Gagné kind of always sticks with Mandriva, and he's been doing that for a long time now.
I know you like Slackware, but I don't quite think that Slackware is the best for new users :P

(Look at what the SUSE guys are doing in their upcoming 10.1, which might be delayed a month or something, I think because they wanted XGL or some new stuff in there, there's a brand new KDE frontend for Beagle called Kerry, cool new artwork (GNOME looks a lot flashier than it used to) and all in all, lots of good stuff).
