I always hear complains about aRTs, on TLLTS, being a crap solution for multiple audio streams.
Well for a sure fire solution to the problem that aRTs tries so solve, why not just get a sound card with hardware mixing? I use a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 and it works great and only cost me £10 (approx $18). Check out http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/in ... All#matrix, all cards with (3) in the right-most column have hardware mixing.
Replacement for aRTs (not software)

By the end of the year it won't matter anyway, by then KDE will have their new multimedia frame, which is called Phonon (http://phonon.kde.org), finished, implemeted and hopefully have KDE 4.0 out the door.
Right now a hardware mixing soundcard is great thing, I use a Soundblaster 5.1 Live too, the cool thing about this card is that it just works, and works great.
