TLLTS #131 - Amazing Miguel Interview
I am about 2/3 of the way through the latest TLLTS episode #131 from LWE and I gotta say... the interview with Miguel de Icaza is really, really awesome. Great questions, great answers, great topics... he seemed like he was really into it.
I'll finish it up on my way home tonight but I just had to post about it. If anyone is interested in hearing what Miguel has to say about Mono, .Net, Beagle, Banshee, F-Spot, Ruby etc. you really should listen.
Kudos, guys!

Miguel is a very cool guy. FYI, Kino actually uses gtk+ and is not a KDE application. He came by the booth again today and we talked about Kino, Diva and why he prefers gtk over qt. Unfortunately that was totally off the record. Regardless he was a very good interview and can come back anytime he wants to. Dan is adding the next episode as we speak. We talk to Bruce Parens and have dinner with Jeremy from linuxquestions.

Well, I was refering to his comments that was dissing KDE, but anyway, the interview was very good, and yeah he sounds like a cool guy, so what the heck, as long as the SUSE guys are at Novell, KDE isn't going anywhere anyway!Patrick wrote:Miguel is a very cool guy. Sounds great, just as a suggestion, if you go to the SUSE guys' booth (#325), see if you can find a guy named Michael Löffler (Product Product Manager of the openSUSE project) and talk to him for a few mins.Patrick wrote:Dan is adding the next episode as we speak. Tsuroerusu, you must be psychic!!! Tommorow's episode will have a 30 minute talk with Michael. We also talk to Kevin Carmony from Linspire as well.Tsuroerusu wrote: Sounds great, just as a suggestion, if you go to the SUSE guys' booth (#325), see if you can find a guy named Michael Löffler (Product Product Manager of the openSUSE project) and talk to him for a few mins.

I'm ordering a slice of pizza for that one!

One more thing: Diva looks freaking awesome. Kino is great, and I have done some basic video editing with it, but to have something like iMovie, something that integrates video editing with audio editing, so you can separate the audio from the video, fade background music in/out, etc. would be so great.
Check out these screenshots, it looks really fantastic:

It does, I'd just wish it was a KDE app, why do all the good stuff have to be GNOME apps, that's not to say that everything should be made for KDE, that wouldn't be fair to the GNOME users, but seriously, when is the next time KDE will get a kick ass app?Chess wrote:One more thing: Diva looks freaking awesome.

Makes me wonder whether I should start giving gnome another look. All those gtk# apps are looking very nice, and the work they're doing on optimization is getting me interested. We'll see how KDE4 does, but you're right Tsuroeruso, there are a lot of good gtk apps. Gimp, Inkscape, Firefox (sort of), and now F-spot, Banshee, and Diva. I'm considering starting up an "emerge gnome" one of these nights.

Well, even though Diva may be awesome, I'm still not giving up KDE as my default desktop, GNOME is far from the point where I would use it as my default desktop, the GTK apps needs to be snappier, I don't want to hack config files to change simple things that I can do through the KDE Control Center, I love the integration that KDE offers.Vogateer wrote:Makes me wonder whether I should start giving gnome another look. Fedora Core 5 provides a nice GNOME desktop, especially if you get rid of the old-ass Bluecurve icons and replace them with the new refreshing Tango icons, if you have a test box, try Fedora Core 5, really good stuff.Vogateer wrote:I'm considering starting up an "emerge gnome" one of these nights.

I'd be interested in knowing what "simple" changes you need to make that require hacking config files in Gnome. Everything I need to configure is configurable from menus.Tsuroerusu wrote: Well, even though Diva may be awesome, I'm still not giving up KDE as my default desktop, GNOME is far from the point where I would use it as my default desktop, the GTK apps needs to be snappier, I don't want to hack config files to change simple things that I can do through the KDE Control Center, I love the integration that KDE offers.

I see another KDE vs Gnome discussion being started
meh I love KDE and no longer use any GTK apps on a daily basis. I love how integrated everything is on KDE. All I need now is some more improvements on Krita (a KDE image editor in which the UI is *NOT* made from the devil) and a really good video editor and some improvements on Gnash so I could use flash with Konqueror.

Well, I consider it simple to change stuff some with file associations, colors of the environment (Yes, I know about the "Theme" options in GNOME, but I don't see a way to change the individual colors, if there is, feel free to let me know) but I don't want to get into all of this, because with the 2.14 release, I'm a lot more positive towards GNOME in general, and let me say this, if I weren't to use KDE, I'd use GNOME.Gomer_X wrote:I'd be interested in knowing what "simple" changes you need to make that require hacking config files in Gnome.
