I just wanted to say that I had bought suse 9.3 a while back and ran it for a while but ended up switching.

Now that I built an amd64 machine I put suse9.3 on it and I was very pleasantly surprised.

solid memory usage - all plugins are there flash - java etc
and it seems really really rock solid stable -

can't wait for 10.1 to hit the shelves - going to upgrade my amd64 machine
I still run ubuntu on my i386 box and imac 266 tangerine that my wife and daughter use. but I think I will be keeping suse on my amd64 machine for a while.

Something I should mention about SUSE 10.1, I think you may need to use something like yum with Yum Extender or apt4rpm with Synaptic, because even though the guys at SUSE are working their asses off right now and had to delay 10.1 to the end of April, the new package manager may be a little effy because it was introduced so late in the beta stage, I think it was pressure from "above", aka Novell, that made the SUSE guys incorporate some of Ximian's Red Carpet technology, because of the upcoming enterprise releases.

The guys over at Packman have already started the process of building multimedia packages for 10.1, so when it is finally released, you should be able to have all the multimedia stuff you'll need.

I was going to just buy 10.1 when it is on the shelves and then use yast and the dvd to upgrade to 10.1. then when it is installed I change the installation source to the network so if I need to install something I won't have to have the dvd handy. then any like media stuff like mp3 dvdcss support I just use apt or install the stuff manually with rpm.

will that still be an option? cause that is how I use to upgrade like from 7.x to 8.x and it always worked. so will this all change? where do you get your info on 10.1.

I don't know for sure, because I havn't tested the new package manager, but right now the developers are having some serious problems with it, in this case I would probably just backup all my data and do a new install from scratch, or at least MAKE SURE that I had my data backed up before I attempted the upgrade process.

No, things should not change, but the problems comes from the short development time this new package manager has had, it has some stuff businesses should find interesting like remote management, better dependency resolution, and it does some other things, but it's really a mess right now. But of course you can always just install apt4rpm and use that as it has nothing to do with YaST, it just does it's own thing.

I regularly check opensuse.org for new info, I was at an IRC status meeting yesterday where Andreas Jaeger and some other guys were discussing these issues and stuff, also I watched some presentations from FOSDEM.

Personally I just hope they can get that package manager to be stable enough to not annoy anyone, and then they can polish it off for 10.2 or something.

jsusanka, if I were you, I would just get 10.1 for free, and buy 10.2 or 10.3, because I think 10.1 will disappoint you a little if you pay 60 bucks for it, having said that, if you just stick with yum or apt4rpm, and just avoid the new package manager.

Even though there may be issues, I still look forward to 10.1, because there will be a lot of new features that will be very cool, such as "Kernel Module Packages" so ATi and NVIDIA can make RPMs of their drivers and have no fuss when a kernel update is issued by SUSE, KDE integration of Beagle and, GCC 4.10 and the new Java stuff from the GNU project which is a big thing to me, because then I don't have to use Sun's non-Free Java to statisfy my Azureus addiction

might try that but when I try it with 10.0 it wants to uninstall the kernel-non-gpl stuff and the flash plugins along with other plugins.

so apparently there is a difference between the open suse amd64 version and the retail store bought suse amd64 version.

if you know a way around this that would be great

also do you know if they will have the suse 10.0 installation tree on their ftp servers - all I see is 9.3 and then they just have some miscellaneous stuff for 10.0

SUSE Linux 10.0 has two versions, the so called "evaluation edition" which is what you get if you buy the retail version (Includes Flash, Sun's Java, Opera etc.) and the "OSS edition" which is purely open source software.

They do indeed have the entire 10.0 tree on the mirrors, some of them just don't have it all, I have no idea why, you can find a list of that right here: http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version

If you look here: http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories
You'll find the repositories for Java, Flash etc.

With 10.1 the naming scheme is gonna be different, there will no longer be "editions", but there will be two flavors of SUSE Linux, the version you can get at opensuse.org will be the one without proprietary plugins and stuff, ftp.suse.com (And the mirrors of it) will have the one with the proprietary plugins and stuff.

By request of some kernel hackers, the kernel-*-nongpl packages are no longer a part of SUSE Linux (Beginning with 10.1), instead, there will be a feature in the distro called Kernel Module Packages (KMPs), which allows guys like NVIDIA to make an RPM package of their driver for SUSE which the users then eaisily can install, and that module will be handled cleanly when a kernel update is available which is very nice.

I just installed Ubuntu Dapper on my spare partition to play around with the XGL stuff, but I've been wanting to try SUSE for awhile now. I'll probably try it out when 10.1 gets released.

Hey, Tsuroerusu, did you see the demo Robert Heron did of SUSE 10.0 on DLTV? Nice to see the big videocasts like DLTV promoting something other than Windows for once!

I think SUSE will have XGL included, and NVIDIA should have a driver release before 10.1 is out, so hopefully, with the NVIDIA cards you should be able to have XGL working.

I was surprised he said he's going to try and get all his Windows games running on Linux. For a PC gamer freak like him, he's better off leaving Windows on there for gaming, and dual-booting. Sure, there's a handful of native commercial games available for Linux, but it's really not worth the trouble of fiddling with emulators.

Well, Robert has his man box for gaming, he has an older one he wants to try and get it going on. I'm using Cedega to run Medal of Honor, and it works great, just as good as it would do on Windows.

I ended up throwing SUSE 10.0 on here as well. I used the Evaluation DVD, so by default, YAST points to the installation disc. What repositories would you recommend I add to YAST for updating software, and getting all those multimedia codecs such as libdvdcss?

That depends, updates are done through YaST's Online Update component, all the multimedia stuff is at the Packman repository, which are mostly located here in Europe.

Right now, you should have a CD/DVD source under YaST's Installation Sources, first of all, disable that. Then you click the add button, select FTP and add these:

After adding all of these repositories to YaST, click Finish, go to Software Management, once the package lists have been downloaded, add libxine1 (It will replace SUSE's crippled xine-lib) and all the usual stuff like MPlayer, VLC, ffmpeg, w32codec-all etc. etc.

libdvdcss you will need to install before going about adding the sources, because none of them hosts it, even here in Europe, libdvdcss is not legal in some places, I don't want to get the TLLTS guys in trouble for violating the DMCA so I won't post a link to it here, but go to my blog at http://www.jusutsu.frac.dk and look under "Hacking OpenSUSE", ignore the article in general but in the last paragraph you will find a link to libdvdcss.

Just a hint for ya, if you want Sun's Java 1.5, just do a search in YaST for java-1_5 and you'll find it, you may want to uninstall the 1.4.2 Java browser plugin and add the 1.5 browser plugin.
