It's called "FLOSS Weekly" -- I thought Leo said they weren't going with that name?

I just downloaded the first episode. What seems odd is that they are doing a show about free and open source software but they don't provide the show in ogg vorbis format. Weird.

I think it's because such a small percentage of Leo's audience cares about it, when I posted a comment on TWiT.tv about the OGG version of this WEEK in TECH being corrupted, I got flamed very quickly where people was like "Who cares a about OGG?", "Quit whining and use MP3".

It's odd, because none in the US can play MP3 legally on Linux, unless they're using freaking Linspire of course.

That may be true, but Leo do like Linux and UNIX in general, if you've watched The Screen Savers or Call For Help you'd know that, but I agree with you, he is a it of a Mac zealot.

What about that free fluendo gstreamer plugin you told me about? That is fully legal in the US I believe. But yeah it is pretty sad if they not only don't support OGG but flame those that do.

I guess I forgot about Fluendo's plugin, but yeah that is probably an option, the issue is that there are some concern that if a distribution includes it, it may violate the GPL if you distribute a GPLed player with it, but I don't know for sure about that.

Another problem with Fluendo's player is that it's not widely available, and there are only RPMs for Fedora Core 4, and that can be a problem because then it's not exactly easy for inexperiened users to use it, of course we as geeks can always use it, or preferable the mad library, but if we want desktop Linux to succeed we gotta make these things easy for the average computer user out there.

So Debian is breaking the law by including MP3 support out of the box? They host MP3 packages on their US servers that I use.

If it's hosted in the US, it violates the patents owned by Fraunhofer, since we don't have patents in Europe, they can host it here and not break any laws.

That looks like a US server to me. Maybe it's actually located in Mexico, or Canada, lol.

Well, if Fraunhofer decided to sue them, or the people who run the mirrors that host the file, it could cause some problems.
