If you just do a default install of GNOME (When I tried KDE, it did require other CDs) it will only require CD1 and CD2, however you mention KANOTIX, and from that I assume you need KDE for your family, while Fedora does offer a wonderful GNOME experience, I still think SUSE, and even Kubuntu, does a much much better job at a good KDE experience than Fedora.
I have to admit that my favorite KDE experience has been Slackware which leaves KDE as it is supposed to be. Kanotix has done some tweaks which I don't care for in the last version, like the default apps for playing media files.

Also, I think my family could get used to Gnome because feature wise they are similar in look and feel. You have a "start" button, launch tray, window list, and icons in the desktop. As long as the icons look similar to the ones in KDE it won't mean much of a change for them.

Well, it looks like it might be Fedora that gets the chance. A nice fast Gnome with good community support. After I send off my taxes, I think I'll upgrade the memory in that machine and the graphics card, then give it a fresh Fedora install. Unless, I hear something cool about Ubuntu Dapper or Pat starts pimping an other new distro. I have to admit that Pat and Judland got me into Kanotix.

Dude, you have no idea of what I have already written templates for when SUSE 10.1 is out!
