frugalware

Post by platypus_low » Tue Jul 25, 2006 5:13 am

I hear so much talk on the show about the flexibility of slackware and the nice package management (pacman) of archlinux. Well, I don't know if you guys know about this project : http://frugalware.org/ which is slackware plus pacman. I tried it for sometime and was quite happy with it. It's the best of both worlds I guess ... Happy trying ...

Hmmm, looks interesting. I'll have to give it a try myself!

As soon as Slackware goes with the 2.6 kernel I might have to give it a serious look.

Frugalware doesn't use a 2.4 kernel as far as I know. According to DistroWatch, they've been on the 2.6 series since 2004, and the latest release sports a 2.6.16 kernel.

Downloading the ISOs now. I had been wanting to give Slackware another try, and had been hearing good things about the Arch package manager. Seems interesting.

I might have to check this out. I'm sure Linc and Dan would be interested as well.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? I don't even see them touting it as slack+arch. Rubix does sort of promote itself as that, and is a very promising project, but hasn't picked up much steam. As it is currently, frugal is even more bleeding edge than arch.

I have never tried frugalware, but that was my understanding as well: slack+arch.

The wiki page says it is based on Slackware, and their about page reference Patrick Volkerding's code plus Arch's pacman, so it seems reasonable. Their distrowatch page more or less says the same thing. They also have two branches, stable and current, just like slackware. Their packages are also basically tarballs like slack but with a different extension to tell them apart (per their about page). I think the installer is also slackware's installer.

This article talks about it more:
