Hi guys,
I'm in the process of setting up a new myth box. The mobo that I bought has an onboard AC97 VIA chipset for sound. The problem is that I cannot get it to work. It seems to be autodetected and the kernel modules are all loaded properly, but I get no sound. I checked in alsamixer that nothing was muted. There are million options in the mixer, and I can't make sense of it. Just wondering if any of you have had similar problems and could help me out. I've spend my entire Sunday banging my head against this problem. I can post more information if you want. I checked that the mic input works. I don't get any sound under Knoppix either, so I'm mostly out of luck right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have run into that problem myself a few times. Unfortunately not all VIA chipsets are created equal. Dann and I spent an entire day once trying to get the via chipset in my brand new 3.0 ghz machine to behave and the best we could muster was volume on full or nothing at all. You are going to probably have tio resort to doing what I did. Go buy yourself a cheap pci sound card - perhaps a creative labs pci or something like that. Not only will you get sound, but it'll sound better than that crap via chipset can muster to boot.coolfrood wrote:Hi guys,

My sentiment exactly!Linc wrote:You are going to probably have tio resort to doing what I did. Go buy yourself a cheap pci sound card - perhaps a creative labs pci or something like that. Not only will you get sound, but it'll sound better than that crap via chipset can muster to boot.
I have a 3+ years old Creative Soundblaster Live 5.1 (emu10k1), works great everywhere (Linux, BSD etc. etc.) it should be possible to track down one of these for about 10 - 25 bucks on eBay.

After having spent a nice sunny Sunday trying to fix it, I think I am coming to the same conclusion. I'll see what I can get. A Myth box without sound really isn't all that much funLinc wrote:

Will it work out-of-the-box on Ubuntu? I really don't have the energy to futz around with sound configuration any more.

Re: No sound on Dapper with Via onboard
Yes it will, I have yet to find a distro where it doesn't work out of the box, of course you have to make sure it's an actual "Soundblaster Live 5.1" and uses the emu10k1 and not the emu10k2 because sometimes those are kinda hit'n'miss.coolfrood wrote:Tsuroerusu wrote: My sentiment exactly!
