Sounds like the perfect distro for Linc.

ROFL, nice one Dann. And maybe it'd be good for you too, as it doesn't seem to have the kernel issues you described on the show.

Downloaded this as soon as I heard about it (yesterday :) )

Haven't installed it yet, instead played with the VMware "Appliance" you can download and use with VMplayer.

Seems a nice distro so far. Looks like I might be duel booting again and test this out. Looking forward to final version. This should be a good one for the relatives :)

The VM "Appliance" I am using says Beta2. But I checked out the Freespire site and it seems only Beta1 is out :?:

Freespire has been officially released. Unfortunately the desktop is still based on KDE 3.3.2 which is really old. Sounds like there are some bugs. A little disappointing. An extra month would of been nice to fix these issues. I guess 1.1 will be released then.

As a beta release I'd rate it a 7.5
As a final release maybe a 5 :(

Not only that, but check this out:

"Linspire, the parent company to this community-based distribution, claims that because of this Freespire is able to provide better out-of-the-box hardware, file type, and multimedia support, such as MP3, Windows Media, Real, QuickTime, Java, Flash, ATI, nVidia, fonts, WiFi, and win-modems. Freespire also provides one-click access to legally licensed DVD playback software, games, Sun's StarOffice, Win4Lin, CodeWeaver's Crossover Office, TransGaming's Cedega, and dozens of other commercial products."
(Source: http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS2241313233.html)

The reason I highlight ATi, nVidia and win-modems, is that this is a GPL violation, sure a lot of people, including myself, is using NVIDIA or ATi's drivers, but I think the GPL should be respected, I think it's a very simple license, and it's not hard at all to understand and abide by, if you wanna make proprietary drivers easy to install, do what Novell do, see my really long reply here for some info on that.

And for those people who wanna accuse me of spreading FUD about licensing, like someone on digg did, see this: http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/blog/20 ... re+Illegal

Future releases will be more up 2 date. If you read the link I provided in my earlier post, KC details what the first release would be and what would be done with the known shortcomings (like old KDE and soforth).

Put simply, they wanted to have a release, and then work on making it more up2date within the first few point releases. I think thats a fair plan, make sure it works first, then update.

Pretty good plan, that way they get a quick release out, as it's basically just Linspire 5 with new artwork and stuff, so people will start talking and creating hype about it etc.
Plus, Linspire will also get to see if they get angry letters from kernel hackers because of inclusion of proprietary kernel drivers.
Both Novell and Kororaa received angry letters from kernel hackers.

They will. They always take heat, whether its deserved or not. For some reason a commercial linux is bad, but people want linux sold on dells ... ??? Oh well.

That's not what I am referring to, I'm talking about letters that ask them to cease that sorta distribution because the kernel hackers feel Freespire is infringing on their GPL copyrights, they could in theory threaten with law suits etc.

It's not that I'm against Linspire, I just think they should comply with the GPL, it's a really simple thing to do, and doing it will prevent you from getting bad mouthed in the free software and open source communities.

I know that.

What I said is they have taken shit whether they earned it or not. This would possibly be an earned case.
