I honestly don't think its that funny (okay... maybe just a little ). During college I worked at a prestigious university lab (prestigious meaning many many nobel prize winners) and their security practices were horrible. I'm talking stuff like everyone in a particular control room using a single user account, the password to which is well known. And windows machines left unpatched and unprotected such that worms like blaster disable 80% of the users machines. And the one sysadmin who knew what she was doing was completely overworked. Scary stuff.

that makes me laugh even more - if the college took the time to LEARN like they are suppose to and use linux instead of windows their problems would be gone.

there is no reason why any school should be spending money on windows period. anything they want to do can be done with linux.

there is no reason why any school should be spending money on windows period. anything they want to do can be done with linux.

Thats the thing... the end users box (ie, the computers for users whose primary function did not involve computers) were Windows and a few macs. You can imagine how secure they are. But in the 'control room', where the $billion machine is controled, the machines are mostly linux with a few suns here and there. The problem was the support staff was stretched paper-thin, almost no one knew how to use unix, and an overall non-existant security policy.

The place would've been better off with all-windows and a strong firewall. At least then people could be trained to not do stupid things. But since very few people knew what unix was let alone use it, no such training is possible.

The only reason there were so many linux boxes is b/c one of the managers is a complete geek and thought Linux was some magical solution to all your problems. But when I asked him about what the fuck we're going to do with all the hardware and software not supported on Linux he just avoided the question.
