Arch and pcmcia - Patrick?

Patrick - do your pcmcia slots work on your lappy? I can't get mine to do a damn thing - the yenta socket module is loaded, and modules load when I put card in, but I get nothing useful from them. This is looking grim for Arch on my lappy...

I don't have any pcmcia cards so I have no idea if they're working. My wireless card is an internel mini-pci.

Oh well. Looks like it's back to Kubuntu then. I was hoping to give etch a spin, but I installed it on a spare drive last night and it's missing a lot of apps I use regularly.

That sucks man. Did you try jumping on the Arch IRC?

No. I don't IRC much. I've posted in the forums though (I actually posted in two of them since it seems like the laptop forum isn't widely read). The only response so far was someone asking if I was using udev. I'll take a more serious stab at it tonight.

I just installed Arch (Underground Desktop) on to an old Toshiba Satellite laptop, here at the office. I put pcmcia in my rc.conf and it's working just fine (at least the network card that's plugged in anyway).

Are you fully updated? PCMCIA in rc.conf just kicks out errors during boot for me. AFAICT it's a leftover from pcmcia_cs.

I hadn't gotten around to updating the system before leaving for the weekend. But it is Noodle (0.7.1), as that is what the latest version of Underground Desktop is built from.

I had to get the network card working in order to access the repositories, but I just didn't run pacman -Syu yet.

Well, I re-installed kubuntu at lunch. I'm still a major Arch fanboy, but I *need* my lappy to work. I'll do some research and make a stab at it again in the future at some point. The archck kernel is awesome!

try to put modprobe pcnet_cs and then als0 service pcmcia restart. Als0 theere was an0ther line but I d0nt remember at this m0ment.

Yeah - I'm used to those tools. Arch doesn't use pcmcis_cs anymore - it uses pcmciautils. Cardctl etc doesn't exist anymore as far as I can tell. Oh well, the right tool for the job, and in this case, until I learn wtf I'm doing with the new pcmcia stuff, arch isn't the right tool.

What pcmcia chipset (is that the right word?) do you have judland? I'm using the yenta_socket driver, and according to kernel.org this is "a complicated one." Maybe that's my problem. However, I also found similar commands to the old cardctl ones -- maybe I'll give it a go again sometime here in the future.

I'll look that up for you when I'm in the office tomorrow. Hopefully the laptop I installed Linux on will be back tomorrow, too.

Funny thing is, as soon as I resurrected the laptop from the "out of service" pile in IT's closet, someone already took it out to work in "the field" with them. Guess they liked it

I even got an e-mail from the engineer who borrowed it today, asking if I could find an AutoCAD file viewer for it (kind of like a PDF viewer, but for AutoCAD formatted files). I might have a potential Linux user in the works here.
